Magnolia’s food is outstanding, next time you’re back here try the High Cotton a block up the road, it’s also superb...

Molten aluminum works great on fire ants and you even have a souvenir afterward.

It is nostalgic, American, fun, has a great gift shop, decent food, decent prices, friendly people, and rocking chairs on the veranda.

What’s not to like?

That happened several years ago at a CB on I45 between Houston and Dallas. It was an evening meal that looked very much like the one pictured at the first of this thread. Why don’t you ask where the food is cooked or what is in it next time you eat at your CB?

I have a recipe for a potato casserole-—it is delicious, but it is a heart attack on a plate...

You need a casserole dish that has some depth. You can use a GLASS 9 x 12 cake baking Pyrex dish if you want. I also use a tall ‘Visions’ bowl when I need to feed more people.

You need Russet potatoes
Whipping cream-—DO NOT WHIP IT
Lawry’s salt
Salted butter

Thoroughly wash & Cook potatoes—Russets work best- with or without the skins on. Let them cool- slice them & place in a layer on the bottom of the dish. Dot with butter—NOT MARGARINE -—& sprinkle on Lawry’s salt. Repeat layers as above.

Be careful to leave enough room for the UNWHIPPED whipping cream to pour over the contents of the dish. Bake at 350 for about 40-45 minutes.

If you like cheese & really want to be decadent—take it out of the oven at about 35 minutes & sprinkle shredded aged cheddar cheese on top & replace into the oven to finish.

You can do all the prep UP TO the Whipping Cream a day before if you want & cover well & keep refrigerated. Take out & add whipping cream, etc. Cook longer if contents are cold from refrigerator.

Simple, but make sure you have enough for everyone. I never have left-overs from this dish!!

A whole lot better food than Denny’s.

Their chicken and dumplings are very close to what my mom used to make.

IIRC, Cracker Barrel first got on the non-PC map and their parking lots started filling up when management announced that homosexuals would not be hired as waiters.

Wonder how long that lasted?

Basically, it’s a great place to wait in line.

"You can use freshly peeled potatoes, but squeeze as much water out of them after you grate them as you can."

There are companies that offer fresh grated hash brown and home fry potatoes in bags. I buy the Simply Potatoes brand, add my own onions and spices, and they're excellent. There's only me here, but they stay fresh long enough to use them up in a week or less. Here's the link to the product if you're interested:

I enjoy Cracker Barrel when I get to eat there. The closest one to me is about an hour away so I don’t go there very often.

Actually they aren’t. Just tasteless by themselves.

We have a CB in Christiansburg.

Never been there. My aunt calls it Crackle Barrel.

Cracker Barrel breakfast is good. The food other than breakfast is, well, decent I guess. Used to be better, they’ve been infected with the heart healthy thing to excess and no longer seem to use any seasoning, so look for menu items that would imply that they’re well seasoned.

The store can be interesting, it’s sort of a homier version of Stuckey’s I guess, same concept, they’re all along the interstate.

One reason to go to Cracker Barrel is that gigantic stone fireplace with a big wood fire. On a chilly day it’s fantastic, a whiff of wood smoke, that beautiful radiant heat if you can get a table close by, the logs popping and crackling. Cold weather breakfast, start with coffee, by the fire. Very nice.

They do try their best.
It’s a ‘home cooking’ type of food that people want.

I personally despise buffet food so CB beats Luby’s
in that department.

No need; a friend is a waitress at the Dumfries VA location. I can assure WVNan that the food is prepared scratch in the kitchen.

Sorry for your bad experience.

"I had Old timers breakfast yesterday. Good stuff. "

That's the one I always get when I go there.
