Tony Romo will make his 2016 debut on the first day of 2017.
Romo, who has missed the entire season after suffering a back injury in the preseason and then being demoted in favor of Dak Prescott, is expected to play on Sunday, January 1, against the Eagles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
That appears to be a change in plans for the Cowboys, who had previously indicated that they wouldnt risk an injury to Romo in a meaningless game and would turn to Mark Sanchez if they decided to give Prescott some rest in the regular season finale.
The Cowboys may want to make sure Romo isnt too rusty in case they need him in the playoffs. Prescott is the unquestioned starter, but if he were to get hurt in the postseason, theyd turn to Romo to try to guide them to the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys may also want to show other teams that Romo can still play, in the hopes that they can trade him in the offseason.
Romos last regular-season game was Thanksgiving of 2015, when he threw three interceptions and suffered the second of his three recent serious injuries.
You apparently haven’t looked at his statistics (way better than flacco for example). Many years the only reason the cowboys were decent was because of him.
You mean Sunday.
Romo wasn’t injured in pre-season. He injured his back at the beginning of the first regular season game with the Giants at AT&T Stadium.
Romo was great in 2014. but at his age, two years makes a big difference, especially with those injuries. They simply don’t know what Romo has anymore. If he plays well, then teams will be more willing to trade for him. But I certainly wouldn’t make the move without proof that Romo can still play at that level.
You gotta win the big ones.
Did you hear Tony Romo has his own cologne?
You put it on and the other guy scores!
I know at one point Romo had a $55 million guarantee on his new contract, which I think he signed two years ago.
Plus, even if Dallas trades or cuts Romo, the Cowboys will take a $20 million salary cap hit in 2017 because most of Romo’s money was paid as bonus money, which got spread across all six years, but which Dallas must subtract in just one year if Romo leaves the team before six years.
This is Jerry bypassing his head coach again.. Dak is doing just fine. There's no need to play Tony at all. He knows what to do if Dak goes down.
It is a team game, you know right? With the exception of the field goal hold mess up his first playoff game, the losses were primarily on the D, receivers dropping wide open passes on the numbers or non-romo turnovers. He is not a Brady but he’s been one of the 5 or 6 best quarterbacks every year he’s played
It means he got the second largest number of QB votes from all 16 teams in the NFC.
But, yes, I don't see Romo winning a Super Bowl, unless Prescott gets hurt in a 2016 Playoff game, because I think Dallas has the best offensive line and the best running back in the NFL.
I think Dak Prescott is a more interesting long term story than Romo.
I would really like to see how Prescott would play behind a mid-level offensive line and a mid-level running back before I make any long term predictions about his career.
He was injured on Aug. 29th against the Seahawks. It was pre-season.
They have a kid who can be their QB for 18 years, gotta treat him right and make sure you don't mess up this run to the Super Bowl. You don't always get another chance.
I’ve never understood the Romo bashing. Until 2014 he never had a O-Line and the defense was terrible. The 8-8 years would have been 3-13 at best without him. His defenses could never hold a lead. How do you put up 45 points and lose. Romo is an elite QB.
Locally, sports reports had Jerry talking about Romo’s return, until the team had tallied about 9 or 10 wins. When Romo came out with his speech/announcement that Dak had earned the starting QB position, that pretty much shut Jerry’s yap about a Romo ‘return’. Romo is old by professional sports comparisons, and quite injury prone. He should take a good, long look at his life. The next injury he receives could have 4 outcomes: 1) No lasting damage; 2) Significant damage; 3) Life-altering damage; 4) Death.
Romo has a wife and kids. He needs to think long and hard and if stepping back out on the field is worth the risk. Personally, I think he should hang up the cleats while he is still able to function.
Great rim shot!
Agreed. He’s got a bright future ahead of him outside of football. He can go into coaching or become an analyst.
You are correct! Romo is not only an elite QB, but an over-acheiver, which should grant him more validity and respect.
“I think he should hang up the cleats while he is still able to function.”
You make good points. Still, I can see how he might not want to go out like this.
One more win, one more day in the sun, one more for the road and a six-pack to go.
Regrets can gnaw at a man at 0300 on a cold morning.
