PERKASIE, Pa. (WPVI) -- A school district in Bucks County is apologizing to parents and students after one of its high school teachers assigned mathematics homework that included what the district is calling "adult content without a proper context."

It happened at Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pa.

The assignment focused on Maya Angelou and her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

Two of the questions were captured in a photograph sent to Action News from Pennridge Reform.

I’m actually not sure I agree. These are high school students.

Eh. The outrage should be concentrated on having students read Maya Angelou’s crap.

I fail to see what this had to do with math.

Should have just given them the Los Angeles Math proficiency test.

Ridiculous. These are objective questions on the reading. If the
reading is assigned, why would anything in it be excluded as
subject matter for a test?

I taught high school English for 20 years, all classics, and all
contain subject matter that must be handled with care.

But on the subject of Angelou: like I said, I taught classics.

What was the adult content? The OP normally supplies the basics so no one has to click on the link unless they want to read the entire story.

I taught high school English...

OK, fine, whatever. This was not an English Lit test; it was "Math" supposedly. These questions were a thinly veiled pretext to normalize deviancy. We are faced with an education system intent on undermining decency at every level and by any means.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

It doesn’t matter if they are high school students.

They don’t need to be exposed to that crap and it has NOTHING to do with math, whatsoever.

The content for a math question was totally inappropriate and smacks of liberal, early sexualization and glorification of inner city culture of these kids. The person who decided that those were appropriate math questions has an agenda and it is to desensitize the kids to that way of life.

Speaking of adult content, I’d be more concerned about the elementary level health curriculum in the national standards. Pretty raunchy stuff.

Sorry - did not see that it was a math test. I just glanced at the questions, assuming it was something they read and discussed at length. But to have it gratuitously added on to a math test boggles the mind. And why those questions highlighted? I think you may be correct about the moral disposition of this teacher, and for certain about the govt schools.

That is really the problem. It seems to be some attempt to intertwine math and other subjects. I can see why school teachers in hard sciences and math strive to show students the relevance to everyday life, but this particular attempt just seems contrived and distracting.

There is plenty of literature out there that does not involve rape, drug use, pimps or abusive families. High school students are old enough for such subject matter, but I think it turns them off of reading for pleasure to include these dark subjects.

It’s really starting to look like having any critical thinking skills is reason for being banned from the edu industry.

>> on the subject of Angelou ...

She was snotty, arrogant, rude, and had minimal talent for the position she achieved. She is not missed by her peers and associates.

In Eduspeak this assignment is both interdisciplinary and inclusive.

A sterling example of modern education.
