MV**2; Increase the Velocity, and an exponential amount of energy can be delivered to the target. Increase the Mass, and a linear amount of energy can be delivered.
Large mass bullets moving at a relatively slower speed made sense 100+ years ago when metallurgy and manufacturing processes were not as well understood or manageable as today.
Lighter bullets traveling at higher rates of velocity deliver more energy to the target, create a more manageable recoil, more rounds per pound, etc. Weapons must be cleaner, and malfunctions can be more catastrophic.
You were the one who claimed it was the 9mm responsible for German loss.
Actually it is artillery which killed more soldiers in WWII than anything else.
Actually by the end of WWII the Russians were mostly using little .31 caliber sub-machine guns. They proved highly efficient apparently.
Yeah sure - in domestic violence, mob hits, hunting accidents, and the occasional drug deal gone bad. But combat is a whole different beast. I'll stick to the .45 and you can carry the .22.

Yes the Red Army did go to the 7.62 X 25 PPsH-41 SMG as their primary close infantry weapon but that was because it put out a huge mass of firepower in the hands of only slightly skilled troops. They also lost huge amounts of those troops but didn't really care how many they lost.
I would prefer that our troops - our kids - be given the best possible weapon systems in the best possible calibers - don't you?

Yes you foolishly hinted that the German Army of WWI and WWII was incompetent and that their choice of the 9mm was evidence of that.
Of course the German Army typically inflicted far more casualties on their enemies than the received so I did not think it a very good argument.
I know very little of combat tactics etc. but I do know guns.
The 9mm Parabellum was formed from the 7,65mm Parabellum caliber turned out to be too anemic to kill horses, among other things. The just blew the neck out to 9mm and jammed a 115gr slug into it and Voila, a new pistol caliber. Conversely, the Thompson-Lagarde ballistic tests refined and produced the ubiquitous .45 which has proven to be as effective as the tests promised. I have served in combat and have seen men shot with the .45 and all of them died. Conversely, I knew a man who survived Normandy with five 9mm hits to his lower body. I dated his daughter under his ferocious glare many years later.
War is about killing people, first shot if you can because the next shot will be the enemy's. It's not an academic exercise and it's not supposed to be skewed to favor weaker folks.
When you're fighting for your life and the lives of the men around you, you need effectiveness, not a compromise.
NP. “Undeclared war” cuts both ways, as a police action enables the use of hollow points.
