Russia has banned Jehovah’s Witnesses after the Supreme Court ruled the Christian sect to be an “extremist” group.
“The Supreme Court has ruled to sustain the claim of Russia’s ministry of justice and deem the ‘Administrative Centre of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia’ organisation extremist, eliminate it and ban its activity in Russia,” said judge Yuri Ivanenko.
“The property of the Jehovah’s Witnesses organisation is to be confiscated to the state revenue.”
A lawyer for the justice ministry, Svetlana Borisova, told the court adherents “pose a threat to the rights of the citizens, public order and public security”.
Judges ordered the closure of the group’s Russian headquarters and 395 local chapters, as well as the seizure of its property.
Lawyers for the Jehovah’s Witnesses said they would appeal the court’s decision, which has not yet come into effect, and could take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
“We will do everything possible,” Sergei Cherepanov, a Jehovah’s Witnesses representative, was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
In 2010, judges in Strasbourg found a previous ruling by a Russian court to ban the organisation unlawful.
The ministry of justice had previously applied for an order to shut down its national headquarters near St Petersburg, state media reported.
Its administrative centre, which has 175,000 members, had previously been suspended in March over alleged “extremist activity”.

You are right. They were demonized, persecuted and executed just as much as the Jews were...Maybe not in the same numbers but definitely they were rounded up for execution.

That’s just not true. You can only join the JWs if you AGREE with their teachings - of course! How open is that really? And, yes, I know every Church or sect is probably like that, but cults are “open” to all the members they can control. When the JWs can’t control you any longer they ostracize you. Again, most religious groups have a form of excommunication, but with the JWs no one in the organization will speak or associate with you not even your own family members.

No. Cults are open to new members. What they are not open to is scrutiny. If cults were so hard to join, how many members would they have? A cult often uses apocalyptic warnings to recruit people out of fear. The JWs did that for more than 70 years!

Actually the word cult is used because it is appropriate. The JWs are a dangerous and stupid group that have no standing in scripture, history or common sense. A friend’s neice died last year at age 42 from breast cancer as this religion prohibits blood transfusions and therefore, as a believer, she couldn’t undergo surgery. What a waste.
Eastern Orthodoxy is merely semi-Paganism. The victory of Orthodoxy only means the victory of a nominal Christianity, at best, with lots of people ignorant about what scripture actually teaches—nor would they care, either way.
Case in point, Russia’s historically low Church attendance, even over the past few years, where religious adherence to Orthodoxy is at extreme highs.
This is true. There is nothing inherently wrong with banning JWs. But they should have banned Islam too, at least from Russian proper.
In fairness to the education thing, Universities are Marxist Incubators that would turn most people from the religion of their birth. And it’s not because they’re teaching critical thinking skills.
