Schieffer bewildered his audience by suggesting, “There are many parallels to Watergate. But I have to tell you, I think all the way back to the Kennedy assassination, to draw parallels.” The veteran journalist stretched, “I was there, as you know. I have always felt that if Lee Harvey Oswald had been put on trial, a lot of these conspiracy theories that are still circulating today would have been put at rest then.”
One can sort of see what Schieffer was aiming for, in relation to dispelling conspiracies about the Russian investigation, but it’s still a bizarre comparison to make.

Want a parallel to Watergate? The Left wanted to impeach Nixon in his first term, long before Watergate. They wanted any excuse.
The calls to impeach Trump came from the left within the first month.

I recall 9-11 when the Left was scoffing as the attacks were compared to the Kennedy assassination in terms of impact.
I once sat next to Schieffer at a Pentagon “five O’clock Follies” briefing on Vietnam and thought, what a fucking prima donna ahole. The press conference was all about him and his asking a question or two, despite the fact that there were several does of us DOD accredited reporters there waiting our turn to ask a question of Jerry Friedheim.
When I asked Friedheim a question about whether our B-52’s were armed (in response to a report that DDI had in their daily Current News (clippings handout) that a MIG 21 had shot through a B-52 cell (3 planes), I got a none response.
As I was walking out of that conference with Gen. Chappie James, I said to him, “This conference was BS and a waste of time”. He smiled that big grin of his and said “I know that” and walked away almost laughing.
Today, the correspondents are shoveling the BS faster than a manure spreading in Spring.
