Thinking about buying a gun. Any advice?

Posted on 07/04/2017 7:01:30 AM PDT by A Cyrenian

I'm thinking about buying Smith & Wesson SW22 pistol to start target shooting. I've thought this could be fun for a while and now have the opportunity to join a local gun club.

What advice can you give me on owning a small caliber pistol?

Thanks.

Having to re zero the Buckmark after cleaning is just too much trouble.

If I get to be a good enough shot that I can tell any difference after cleaning, I guess I'll have to switch to something else.

I’ll give you a Buckmark trigger tip. You’ll find videos on trigger jobs. You turn the trigger spring over. Your pull is about 2lbs. It really works if you want a hair trigger.

I've read about the "spring flip", but haven't been tempted to try it.

FWIW, Browning is offering a $50 mfg. rebate on all of their rimfires until 7/15.

Too much “thinking” and not enough “acting” could be very dangerous...Just sayin...

See that it feels comfortable in your hand. Pull the trigger to see how much tension it has. We had no idea about these two features and wound up with guns not so easy to fire and practice with.

Always assume the gun is loaded until you personally make sure it isn’t. Keep it pointed in a safe direction. Never aim at anything you don’t intend to shoot. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are prepared to shoot. Clean after shooting.

Over the years...the .22 was probably responsible for the most deer killed too.............

“A 22 cal is really only good for target shooting.”

Nonsense. Don’t underestimate the humble 22. A shot through the kneecap will take the fight out of most people. One through the brain is an instant kill, even for a grizzly.

Probably the round of choice of Chicago thugs, quiet and deadly.

Years ago I knew a man at Chouteau who told me how he killed deer with a .22rim fire on the Neosho river east of there.

Take a gun safety course.
Apply what you learn to handling your weapon.
RTFM (read the effing manual).
Buy ammo regularly.
Shoot often, and have fun.

Whatever you buy, sign up for a small arms combat training course. A good instructor will train you how to react in various situations.

I like my Browning Buckmark. Remove two screws & you can swap barrels. I use the heavy target barrel for punching paper or varmits. I got a Tactical Solutions 4” lightweight barrel for trail carry or to screw on my Gemtech Outback II suppressor. It makes for a quite versatile package.

For a 22 caliber pistol I think the new easy to disassemble Ruger Mark 4 as excellent and as a 22 rifle the Ruger 10/22 is fantastic, there is so much aftermarket stuff for it.

I have a Ruger Mark I made in 1953, year I graduated from high school. Love it. It is also a collector piece for me.

The Mark I is not an easy to disassemble semi. I like what you say about the Mark 4.

I also have a 10/22. Really like it. I would recommend a 10/22 anytime. Mine is accurate. It does have a scope. As far as the aftermarket stuff, I have modified mine.

I was shooting at an empty tall aluminum can, no rest for the rifle, and from 75 yards I put five rounds through the can in a tight grouping, some rounds touching. And the can was not knocked down. I was using some high velocity Aquia ammo.

22 cal kills more people, every year, than any other cal. It is, literally, the most lethal round by body count.

There is a conspiracy theory that says FDR's Cerebral hemorrhage was caused by a 22. More speculation about who did it.

Stalin was suspicious, and send Gromyko to view the body. Not allowed. No one was allowed to view the body. Sometime later, the son of the funeral director who did the embalming, quoted his father saying there is no way to repair the hole in his head. And it was closed casket.

S&W is good choice, Ruger auto .22’s are great pieces but are a challenge for a beginner for in depth field strip cleaning. Ruger . 22 revolvers are great choice but expensive. You might consider Rough Rider .22 revolvers they are decent.

Before moving to next level go to a range and rent various pistols and caliber choices. If you have a friend with several that’s even better.

Above all learn the Four Rules of firearm usage/safety, drill them into your head. Good hunting!
