Thanks, that’s what I figured. I played with VMWare at one time but I think it’s no longer free.

I work for government agency that builds its own images (you can guess where this is going). Brand new HP laptop with a custom install of Windows 8. Functioned well except, at random, the bus running all the peripherals; keyboard, mouse, ID card reader would quit working. The IT response was to put a custom Windows 7 image on the computer. No problems with the bus shutdowns, but now getting blue screens of death a couple times a day. Next they pushed an update two weekends ago. Not sure what it was supposed to do, but it killed all the application icons. If I clicked on a particular document it would open the appropriate document in its application, but it left me without access to my email.

All very frustrating.

“How can I block this update until this issue is resolved? “

disable the Windows Update Service (wuauserv) and then reboot. no more updates.

Or just download the internet; then you won’t need WiFi any more.

I updated two laptops to Creators and have had no core issues, but I have run into some compatibility problems w/ two third party software programs (RedOxygen Office SMS and Bose SoundTouch). Have kept to v. 1607 on my main workhorse and with the exception of one Office update which impacted all my machines (email search errors, now fixed w/ latest update) have had no troubles w/ regular updates.
Creators has some great features, so looking forward to the official update for my desktop, but I will get there slowly as they work out the kinks.
I saw somewhere that MS is moving OEMS to system-only drivers, which ought to minimize these types of problems.

Pretty crappy VM if the guest software can figure out it’s in one. Kinda defeats the purpose of “virtualization”, doesn’t it?

Yeah, I had major issues with my son and my own PC’s wifi adapter after. Had to download the latest driver from the vendor.

Thanks for those links. The first solved the problem. I installed the drivers at the link then rebooted the laptop. I didn't realize that the same update was waiting to install. It came back okay and I'm connected.

Here is a screenshot of what it installed for network adapters. I don't even know what those other adapters are.

I have a feeling they're some Windows adapters that they created to ensare more people.
