These Servers Can Tell How Much You’ll Tip Just by Looking at You

The minute you walked in the joint, I could tell you were a man of distinction — a real big tipper.

Granted, today’s crop of servers at the city’s restaurants are probably not humming anything close to this old standard, but experienced waiters and waitresses say that they usually know how much they are probably going to get tipped as soon as a customer walks in.

“Generally, men tip better than women,” says Meleck Verbay, who tends tables at Le Midi, an East 13th Street French restaurant where dinners range up to $50. She says that she “hates to generalize,” but adds that the gender tipping gap can get pretty wide, with men usually tipping about 20 percent (and occasionally as much as 40 percent) while women can go as low as 15 percent, or even 10 percent.

I have worked in restaurants when I was starting out. I would recommend every snowflake work in a restaurant for a year. So many life lessons.

I’m a twenty=percenter, generally, unless you insult me. Then you get the two shiniest pennies I can find, one up and one down.

They have no worries figuring me out, will never set foot in a NYC “joint”.

You’ll get 20 percent from me for excellent, personal service and would have to have done something extraordinary to get more than that. Competent but unremarkable service gets 15 percent. Mediocre service gets 10. Bad service gets just enough to let them know I didn’t forget.

Did that about 15 years ago. Can’t remember how the pennies were oriented, though. I’m no sure they were shiny, either. But it was, specifically, 2 cents. Only done that once.

Pretty much my scoring, too. Though, these days, when I’m fortunate to dine out, I usually wind up at fast food to save.

There actually are a few sit down country diner sorts of places around here that are fairly decent and as cheap as fast food inclusive of tip so I try to go there when I can, their breakfast is usually the most appealing.

I have two standards now, one for conservative areas of 15 - 20% and for liberal areas a note saying “tip, what no living wage with health care?”.

I’ve splurged on a really nice meal maybe a couple of times a year since 2008. Prior to that year I did that several times per week, but it was expensed through my business. The price of a good steak is startling, a really nice filet is close to thirty dollars now unless you get the petite. That’s just too much money. I’m starting to sound like my dad, lol. Live and learn, sometimes you come by tightwad habits the hard way I guess.

I go out seldom (we like to cook our own food) but when I do I go 25%. Former bus boy, waiter, taxi driver.

I haven’t had steak for over 2 years now and even then it was at an Applebee’s (some can debate the steak, LOL). And that was only because I had free gift certificates that had been passed on to me.

But, thank God, I eat just fine.

This week made BBQ turkey slices because sliced turkey was on sale at the grocery store for $4.99/lb (not super cheap but OK). Made a sauce of onions, butter, soy sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce and paprika.

Goes well with my BBQ beans made with the same stuff except diced pepper and bacon.

Maybe I’ll make it to Outback for one of their Walkabout Wednesday specials one day. Like $9.99.

When we’re in the mood for nice prime steak, I get some from Costco and we make it at home.

I never “got” Outback, I do know a lot of people love the place but I just don’t see it. If it were more reasonably priced, I might get it.

Seems as if the prices never settled back down after that big winter freeze and storm several years ago that caused the loss of a lot of cattle. Maybe exports have kept the price up, I don’t really know. What even a decent ribeye runs at a butcher shop now is what I recall paying for the same thing served to me cooked with a salad and a baked potato ten years ago. Generally speaking, other than those splurges a few times a year that I mentioned, I don’t eat steak anymore. They want too much money.

Manager at one once took good care of a buddy and myself when our order got messed up.

I never could afford to go back. But this special, steak or chicken breast, with fries and drink is not too bad for $9.99.

Hope to give it a try but only available on Wednesdays.

Nearest Outback to me is a little out of the way anymore and Wednesday isn’t a night I’d generally be dining out, but I’ll have to look into that.
