Hundreds of sheep killed after bear chases them over cliff
Telegraph ^ | July 22, 2017 | Rory Mulholland

"Their deaths have reignited the bitter debate over the presence of bears in the mountain range that straddles the French-Spanish border, where they were reintroduced 20 years ago after disappearing in the early 1990s."

This is a story about the government wanting to please animal conservationists' by reintroducing bears (who, by way of natural selection, had dwindled in population) near farmers' livestock.

Another example of over-involvement of the government if you ask me.

Those poor bears, forced to chase sheep! Couldn’t we just feed them environmentalists?

When I go “out in the woods”, what I see is too many hikers, birdwatchers, dog walkers, tourists, joggers, and other unnatural fauna. I see reintroduction of large predators as a way to limit and cull these invasive organisms.

Wow! The sheep are having a rough year.
First Hillary loses, then 80 sheep commit suicide in Turkey and now this.

I wonder if the sheep were possessed by demons?

nothing new

Go onto the American and Canadian prairies. The aboriginals used to drive bison off cliffs (”buffalo jumps”) to do a mass slaughter as part of their food gathering.

And practicing sustainable bison.... /sarc

As a long time sheep farmer, I can tell you that sheep are born looking for a place to die.

and, according to early settlers (and Mark Twain), they would only take the choicest bits leaving the rest to rot, trusting in the Great Spirit to provide them fresh buffalo every year

from a separate source,

” “The animals here have become especially fond of rapeseed oil, which is used in chain saws and large machinery.” Rauer recently dealt with a case involving a steam roller that a bear had dismantled to reach the oil in the hydraulic system — the most costly damage he has ever seen, says the biologist.”

My favorite book. "Today I baled some hay to feed the sheep the coyotes eat"

If you ever farmed sheep, it is spot on in both illustrations and narrative.

The (re)introduced bear and the sheep are a perfect metaphor for the ongoing mooselimb invasion.

What do you mean the sheep are ‘born looking for a place to die’? I have no experience in raising or herding livestock.
Are they glum and listless by nature?
If you were just joking, I guess I took the bait.

No mountain bikers screaming down the trails?
