Hi all. Puerto Rico WAS NOT blown back to the middle ages, Matt Drudge.
Most of our buildings are built of reinforced concrete. The rest is claen up, restore services, and let nature heal itself.
There are no riots, no looting, roads are being cleaned. It will take a long time to restore everything, but we should be back real soon. I mean. Old San Juan is still there, the beaches are still there. The Rainforest will restore itself after many years of overgrowth.
We will be back real soon.
JUST SEND ICE! I don't care what anyone says, we need a flotilla of large cargo ships loaded with ICE. We need ICE machines and generators to run it. We need a massive and efficient effort to distribute ICE around the island. With ICE taken care of, we can take care of ourselves.

Someone should send a message to the Trump Admin that when the POTUS visits PR & USVI, that he should bring a freighter with ice.
Why do they not have ice making equipment and generators in sturdy buildings in place now? A little planning can be helpful in situations like this.
What PR spends on welfare and corruption would have many of these in place now.
We also worry about Phosphorescent Bay located in Vieques.
Hearing that the island was stripped of trees, can’t possibly be of help to those of us worried about the beautiful wildlife: birds, horses, etc.

I imagine that cll is having trouble getting on line as he is near San Juan as is my son and family. My other son and I have been able to text my son in PR, and he has answered both of us by text. I did not know the texting uses a lot less transmission capacity than cell phoning. So if you have had trouble reaching people try texting, not phoning. Before the hurricane hit he described his situation as being reasonably good. After the storm he told my other son that his building was in good shape but a lot of water had blown under the front door into the living room. I will post other details as I get them from my sons. The site below has a lot of comments including some other links at the comments, including one to a dam failure danger.
Do not go if you are not physically capable and in good health. Expect this to be like a camping trip with purifying your own water and carrying much of your own food. If you do go, have a good supply of first aid supplies, Vitamins and especially Vitamin C to help combat Zika, Chichingunya and other mosquito borne illnesses, oh, and repellent. Carry minimum clothing and maximum camping food and water purifying kit or tablets, batteries. Actually extra batteries and repellent might be better than cash to trade for some necessities. Reports are that there will be no Island wide electricity for 4 to 6 months. Yesterday I heard a report that 4 mainland airports will be open for people leaving PR—Miami, Atlanta(?), New York, and Philadelphia. The governor of New York may go there. Lots of PR people in New York who can vote. If you are rich, there are probably some hotels that can provide for their guests reasonably well. Check with your hotel before you go. Don’t go if you do not have housing pinned down unless you like sleeping in the open.
Here is link on meeting of PR mayors. Remember, if you can text to worried friends/family, it needs a lot less power to do that. My son near San Juan has sent several texts. Regarding having generators in place, if you can’t keep it fueled it is useless. If you can’t get to gas station, or have electricity to pump gas, or if trucks cannot deliver gas to gas station, it is all useless and currently part of the problem in some/many? areas.

The Observatory in Arecibo had one feed wire get loose and damage about 20 of about 38,000 panels on the main dish. Other than that, it appears to have made it unscathed.

I think you meant Maria (rather than Irma). From my mom and sisters in Puerto Rico, they told me Irma (the storm before Maria, and which never actually touched the island, as its eye passed 30+ miles North of San Juan) was worse than Hugo (which I actually was in PR for, and is the worst I experienced in person.) Hugo was a glancing blow, as its eye entered the NE corner of PR, but essentially bounced off El Yunque.
Maria was a knockout punch, in the style of 1998's hurricane Georges, except Maria packed 145+ mph winds, compared to Georges's 110+.
My sister told me, as bad as Irma was, Maria was many times worse.

I was in the Navy Reserve in 1989, and our drill weekend at NAS Roosevelt Roads was the weekend immediately after Hugo. I am still surprised that I was even able to get there FRom my home in Ramey! My unit (as did all the other at Rosey Roads) spent the weekend cleaning up the base. Hellofamess!
The Ramey area escaped significant damage during Hugo. Have you any word on the condition of the Ramey/Aguadilla/Rincon area since Maria? I enjoyed my time at Ramey, and hope the damage there is not too severe.
No problem. I haven’t heard much about the Aguadilla area. I was in college at Mayaguez during Hugo. It broke my heart having to leave my family in San Juan to deal with cleanup after the hurricane, but we were told to go back to school, so...

How did you wind up in Wisconsin? Pretty state and great people (except for the Speaker!), but, man, it gets FRIGID in the wintertime, and it is FRIGID for many months! NOT PR weather, atall!
