LUBBOCK, TX - A Roosevelt ISD mother, Michelle Decker is speaking out against the school district after she said the assistant principal used excessive force when discipline her fifth grade son with corporal punishment after he talked back to a teacher.

"She said Gianni has two choices, he can either go to ISS for three days or he can get three swats," Decker said. "Gianni told me he didn't want to go to ISS, he said 'I'll take the swats Mom"

Decker said when her son got home she noticed him limping up the stairs, and when she asked him to show her what was wrong, she noticed dark bruises on him.

"He pulled his pants down and I immediately started crying," Decker said. "I spank my children but I would never hurt them the way he was hurt,"

The Roosevelt ISD Superintendent, Dallas Grimes gave a statement:

With any luck he learned a valuable lesson, but listening to his mother, I doubt it will stick very long.

YES I managed to receive a few Swats in School, Every Last one, More than Well Deserved. The PE Coaches were Brutal with their Swats, and They Always Left Marks.

Some pretty notorious comments on the thread.

When I was in High school (Tucson) one of my classmate got sent to the Dean of Boys, a dude named Bell. Long story short - the Dean whacked the guy plenty good.

The guy asked Bell if he was finished? When Bell said “Yes” the guy cold-cocked him. The punch was hard enough that Dean was out for some time.

Cops got called.

Cop show up, asked what happened. When it came to hear the guys side of the story, all he had to say was “He hit me first - it was self defense”

The Dean got a trip to the gray bar motel and that was the end of “Corporal Punishment” That was the end of CP for District1 - all schools.

The Dean’s name - Gale Bell - and he had the rep of being a real-deal SOB.

Reminds me of an old PE instructor, (He was ex Military), I had and his ‘Vegetable Machine’. (A longgggg paddle made out of hardwood with 5 or 6 holes drilled through it.) First day into the new School year, first PE class that year, he drags it out to display to the guys and slapping it in his hands says: “This is my ‘Vegetable Machine’. When you guys screw up you have BECOME VEGETABLES....AND YOU WILL GET THE VEGETABLE MACHINE!!!!!” Of course it was only about 3 classes in before some dummy pulled a stunt worthy of The Vegetable Machine’s wrath. In front of the entire PE class he was marched out to the center circle of the basketball court, had to pull down his gym shorts and jock and WHAMMM! (I can still hear the LOUD echo in that gym!) About 3 or 4 other screwups got The Vegetable Machine’s justice that year. A lonnnnnng time ago.

That sounds like an urban legend kids would tell. The tough kid takes the paddling, then all cool like James Dean asks if he’s done, then punches him out.
And the cop arrests the Dean of the school on a battery charge?

In Tucson?

Paper clipping or it didn’t happen.

I bet he was expecting the meaningless love-taps that you forget 3 seconds after it’s over.

I bet he was thinking it over for days.

I bet he doesn’t do it again...

No swatting. Hook the snot-nosed brats up to the car battery.

Couple ‘hits’ w/ the juice, NO bruising, and they WILL behave.

“I oppose the use of corporal punishment in schools. Too many parents or single mothers are (or will be) gaming the system, going for the big bucks.

Also, the kid learned nothing in this case, just play victim, just run to mama, who will run to sue...while the kid will think some adult outside of his folks hitting him is okay...therefore why shouldn’t he hit people since it’s approved by law in his school.

Proper course, among others, would be to keep him after school for two weeks (mama may have to pick him up, goody!)....and forbid him to bring onto the school property any hand-held phone or pocket-sized electronic devices for the rest of the semester.

THAT will REALLY teach the brat !

Some seemingly good ideas that worked well yesteryear are actually counterproductive in this day and age of aggressive students, aggressive parents....and aggressive lawyers.”

I fear you are correct

I propose a new idea. When the kids misbehave punish the parents. Not only keep the kids after school but make the parents sit there with them.

or

Make the parents stay with the kids in school the whole day as first punishment, then three days, then five.

When mommy has to miss work a few times junior will behave.

“When I was in High school (Tucson) one of my classmate got sent to the Dean of Boys”

You know you all showing your age when you say “Dean of boys” or “Dean of Girls” don’t you?

They did not have this when I was in school but my mom and dad spoke of this so I know how old you are.

Why not? It’s either that or expel/suspend them and that is what they want. To them it’s a vacation.

You make the parents uncomfortable and then all bets are off.

The kid has a pretty bad bruise. Swats are one thing, and injuring flesh is another and it’s unacceptable.

I don’t think school teachers or officials should have the power to use force against kids, period. Yeah yeah the old days .... the old days schools weren’t run and employed with lefty sickos.

So many comments on this thread from absolute cretins doing nothing but spouting accusations and insults because a mother is angry her child was beaten up. You guys make me sick more and more often.

Is this what I contribute $25 a month for?

This happened in Texas. I figured they still had it together as with somethings they show reason and sanity.

As much as in theory I applaud your idea, in practice it would be illegal.

As the Good Book sez (in reverse) you can't visit the sins of the children upon the fathers....and neither the school or the law has the right to punish parents in this case....particularly by forcing the parents (or perhaps a single mother) to sit in the school after hours as "punishment to the kid", as you suggest.

She is exaggerating, wants compensation and publicity.

That was my thought. Even with a board, I don't think merely three swats would cause bruising like she describes - unless the swatter missed the target. I got spanked hard enough to hurt but I never suffered a bruise. I can guarantee it was more than three hits.

“... your thoughts freepers....”

My thoughts are simple.. no one but my husband and I touch our kids. Period. All the “corporal punishment” enthusiasts may not see everything. Not all teachers and administrators are good teachers and administrators. It is a mixed bag to be honest. In my honest opinion, if someone wants a county government official to be allowed to hit a child.. they need to ask themselves why can’t someone from the government simply smack the heck out of them if they “talk back”. (like we all do HERE each and every day?)

No legend. Catalina High School, 1970. As for the looking it up - your arm isn’t broken - so, knock your self out...

Ensure the spelling is correct Gale Bell.

One time in Middle school, another student next to me kicked the cord out of the wall and the projector when off.

Coach thought that I did it. It could have been me, I was known to pull a stunt or two back then. But I honestly was innocent that time.

Anyway, Coach stood me up, gave me a whack upside the head, and told me to go the vice principals office.

I said I’d certainly do that right after we find my contact lens that he’d knocked out of my right eye.

BOOM!

He hit the ground in 4/10’s of a second searching for that lens. This was back in 1971 when contacts were very expensive.

I was greatly amused. We found the lens, I spit polished it, it went back in, the real guilty party was outed, and at the end of the day - all was good.

That is where I got you on this.
“Sins of the father”? There are no fathers. They are mostly bastard kids of single moms.

It is the parents fault the kids act this way because there is no one at home raising the feral bunch.

It is one way to try to “force” them to be parents but you may be right in that it won’t work because even with white parents little Billy Dindu nuffin.

I am against any violence done by school teachers/administrators to students beyond self defense. This is not the way to teach non-violent solutions to problems. It is dangerous to the child - a bone can be broken if the paddle misses its mark. Ever hit your tail bone? It’ll cripple you for a while.

No other institution in this country allows such punishment. You can fire people, expel them, suspend them, sue them, have them arrested, cuss them out or walk away, but you can’t beat them. It’s called assault. Hitting someone with a paddle or board is assault with a weapon.

How many of you would agree to be paddled by your boss for a perceived wrong you did? How will a sore ass help you do your job better?

Why would you allow a relative stranger to beat your child? Are you confident that an impartial person will administer a “fair” punishment, & not an angry teacher/administrator with a score to settle?

Furthermore, paddling is often ineffective in ending bad behavior. It is likely that some students get far worse abuse at home or on the street & will laugh off a mere paddling. You think a paddling will get the attention of a teenage gang banger? Maybe, but not in the way you might expect.

The way to get their attention is to take away the thing they value most: play time. After school & weekend detention, combined with some manual labor will do more to correct bad behavior than paddling ever will. Plus it gives the student the chance to think about how they wound up raking leaves or scrapping gum rather than enjoying the day.
