We moved to Panama City from the country in 1951. We lived in Drummond Park which was a working class neighborhood. The complex was built in WW 2 for workers at the Wainwright shipyard. Although they were built quickly they were solid frame houses, most of them 3 bedroom duplexes next to another 3 bedroom.

A few people gave candy but a few gave nothing. Some gave saltine crackers. Us kids got together and told each other who was giving out the best stuff. I don’t think any of us had costumes. Someone was giving out popcorn balls which we thought was the best to get.

Even tho times were getting better, it was still fairly hard times.

My best friend lives in Black Mountain, N.C.

He lives in the heart of trick or treators. They use a counter to see how many they have. Yesterday he told me the counter reached just under 2000.

I suggested that must have cost a fortune in candy but he has a large extended family who all chip in and help out.

We ran out of candy one year and instead of closing I found 2 cases of Sunny Delights (Cheap orange flavored beverage) About 1/2 of them would open it and be drinking it by the time they were at the bottom of our 25 foot driveway. Was a huge hit. All that walking around makes em thirsty.

He truly is a guru—he is my favorite YouTuber for gardening—and pretty much everything else too ;)

This video is a hoot—and just like in the video...I have spoken to teachers in urban school districts who have told me their students have no idea that french fries are made from potatoes or that the potatoes grow in the ground etc...

Anyone wanting to improve at gardening should watch this guy ;)

Thanks for the tip...Not sure if I have come across Old Alabama Gardener—will check it out :)

I am in IL and trying to keep my second planting going...I put in some arctic tomatoes which people usually plant early in the Spring. I am hoping they will do OK in reverse.

I wish I had thought of that—I was running out of candy—Swiss Miss would have been a good idea as I have 2 boxes.

I started some beets and spinach and broccoli and cauliflower but the plants are weak and will probably die.

But I planted onions and garlic a few weeks ago and most of it is sprouting. (Shock!)

If those things do well I plan to go full throttle next spring.

I am going to spend all winter plotting and scheming and watching tutorials.

I watched until the bakers went.....I thought kids were going to hate it, but each kid seemed interested which surprised me. When we were kids, this one lady used to give us freshly baked apple pies (4 inch I think), we loved it. I guess today there would be no way I would let my kids eat something like that. Only wrapped up stuff. Even vegetables I would be leery about letting the kids eat them.
