As a Cowboy fan, I have no skin in this game. According to the way the NFL rules are stated now, he dropped the ball.

As I said above, I'm a Pats fan, but this is an interesting call.

On the one hand, if he had been going to the sideline, caught the ball with apparent control, gotten his knee down and then rolled out of bounds, losing the ball against the ground in the process, it would have been an incomplete pass.

But, if he had been running towards the goal line, extended his hand as he was going down, and then lost the ball after it crossed the plane, it would have been a touchdown, and not a fumble.

Which of these two cases did this play most closely resemble? Does going through the plane of the goal end the comparison with the incomplete pass? I dunno... they'll be talking about this one for a while. I'm glad it wasn't in a post-season game, even if the outcome favored my team. Actually, I think the Steelers outplayed the Pats for the most part, and deserved to win.

You got jobbed dude. Consider it partial payback for that immaculate reception bullshit.

___

LOL... do you think that ball hit the ground?

What’s painful s watching players kneel during anthem.
How many Steelers players knelt today?

One correction....TWO BAD CALLS. That last interception was due to pass interference.

My view is that the rules states he must control the ball to the ground. When his knee hits he is on the ground, and the catch is over. The lunge is not part of the catch and the TD was scored the second he broke the plane.

_________

You're basically totally correct as I understand it.

But seriously, I've been watching football seriously since the mid-50's, and that was a catch if I ever saw one. He had COMPLETE control.

It was bobbled against the ground... but he had crossed the plane. I guess they decided that the pass-catching completion rules dominated the passing the goal-line plane rule.

Even the announcers were surprised. Romo said, “Oh... that’s what they’re discussing on the review”, after first saying “Touchdown!”.

I think it was a catch, but not a touchdown. He had full control when his knee hit the ground. Ball on the 1-yard line.

I’m a NE fan and like the Steelers, but there were robbed. I cannot understand how that was not a catch and crossed the end zone with control of the ball.

I hate the Steelers but must admit that the call at the end of the game was complete BS. At any other level of football (Pee wee to college) that would have been a touchdown. The NFL continues to be stupid in so many ways.

Steeler-nation should be more bent about Rothliesberger throwing into triple coverage.

Yep. Bad call or not, the interception, cost them the game.

It's not football. It's Goodell ball.

And remember, Goodell works for Kraft. Patriots will always have the advantage under Goodell.

based on an arcane rule change in, I believe they said, 2010.

_______

Yes..... thank you. As I mentioned in my initial post, that rule is relatively new (as you said) and totally insane.

But even with it, if you read the damn rule, he still should have been rewarded the TD.

Oh well.... Steelers/Patriots again most likely later this year.

How can you say that after Deflate-Gate?

The ball was jarred loose when the player went to the ground. He had not established possession and by rule must maintain control of the ball to the ground if he has not established possession. If the ball hadn't touched the ground it wouldn't have mattered if he bobbled it because he was in bounds the entire time, but, it came loose AND it touched the ground, therefore, it was an incomplete pass no matter where the receiver was on the field.

Very tough break for the Steelers, but reversing the call from touchdown to incomplete pass was correct.

Even the announcers initially got it wrong and were madly backpedaling while the play was being reviewed. The officials reviewing the play took a long time just to make sure they made the right decision on the review because it was potentially the game deciding play. Tough break, but the pass was incomplete.

.
Every “football move” is unique, thus this is nonsense. Stop crying.

Control of the ball plus two feet inbounds defines a catch. There is nothing else, or we would have endless official reviews (if we don’t already).
