I thought one of the symptoms of diabetes was unexplained weight loss?
In other words: I am so screwed.
I have discovered why diabetics lose weight.
YOU CANT EAT ANYTHING.
But once you get off sugar and excess carbs, your gut bugs change to crave protein and fat, and even veggies. And your diabetes can go into remission or be cured. Good luck to you.
What happened to my puffed rice? It’s GONE! Wonder why.
I can remember my son asking for cocoa puffs or something similar for cereal...my rule was...those are SNACKS...NOT cereals. And, at Halloween when he was about 9, he had a huge load of candy, I reminded him....”you gotta be healthy to play soccer” (he loved soccer), “so take it easy on the candy”...and, amazingly, he did. He seemed to get the message. He’s 47 now and in good shape. And, his son, my grandson, seems to be a healthnut!
Not exactly, you can have unexplained weight gain or loss which is a symptom of many illnesses. Weight loss or gain can be symptoms. Mine was weight gain along with “borderline sugars.” Until down the road when I could hit in the 400’s. My dad could go into the 1000’s. My Brother was hypo so his efforts were to keep the numbers up.
There are two types of the illness, hyper or hypo. Hyper means your sugars will run a little elevated. Hypo is the opposite and they will run low.
You can have the opposite of your normal on occasion. I am normally hyper and I suddenly dropped a huge amount out of the blue and woke up with firemen in my bedroom where I hit the floor. But most of the time I try to keep my count and weight down if I can. Normal, for most people, is 80 to 120. I run a little higher as I am on a few types of medication to keep it down and they do as good a job as can be expected. But not everyone can reach those desired numbers even with medication. So you do the best that you can, one day at a time, one meal at a time.

No, not screwed. You use the tools you get like insulin, I use two types, and oral medication to go along with the other meds used to offset the other possibilities like heart attack or stroke.
It is not the end of the world, just a setback. I have been recognized as diabetic for over 30 years, and have made the transgression from not very bad to worse, to a lot worse.
But my lifestyle has only changed from the standpoint that I am more careful what I eat, when, and how much now. Can I have that second piece of pie? No. But I can have the first one. (Just not a la mode) I don’t drink alcohol as I use blood thinners after heart surgery. Can’t do both. I wanted to stop the thinners and just drink but they didn’t seem to appreciate my efforts. I’m careful with my carbs and try to stay consistent all the time. And I have been successful for many years.
I won’t run a marathon, but I can drive it. Could I play golf or even raquetball? Sure, but not near as good as I was. My age has a lot to do with that. So my life really hasn’t gone bad, just changed a little. You just live and do what you can. I enjoy my life, and will for a while yet. Hope you do, too.

Unexplained weight loss and excessive thirst are symptoms of Type ONE diabetes. Type two diabetes is thought to be hereditary, and is also called adult onset, and is often developed with excessive weight gain. Type ONE diabetes is usually diagnosed before age thirty; called juvenile diabetes. Caused by damage to the part of the pancreas which produces insulin, which results in little or no insulin production, necessitating insulin injections. I haven’t read any research since I retired from nursing, but at that time, it was thought that juvenile diabetes could possibly be caused by a virus Hypoglycemia is often a precursor of age onset diabetes.
New studies show Type 2 diabetes can be reversed.... weight loss, change of foods consumed, etc. One example is Vedda Diet...among others. Fasting once a week helps reset body.
WOW...talk about a bad habit, that would be sugar for breakfast! Protein, and substance are what is healthy!
My kids eat candy, cookies, cake, ice cream, etc. They also eat home cooked meals and lots of fruit. I think too many people buy into the media propaganda about “healthy eating” and are scared to eat fat or sugar. It’s crazy.
I do hold donuts in a different category than pop-tarts or other processed crap you find in the frozen section of the supermarket. A donut can come from a decent bakery or be made at home. But children should have more than a sugary item in the morning - although the French do it and they’re skinny.
We had the same childhood. Prevention is probably responsible for more weight gain than cocoa pops. I also noticed the fun when out of our household at the same time my mother became a devotee of Rachel Carson and all that muck.
You’re right.
