Woman returns dead Christmas tree to Costco in January, gets full refund

SANTA CLARITA, Calf. (WFLA) — While the rest of us were debating where to abandon our trees, one woman decided to take hers back for a refund.

So come January, the woman wanted her money back for her once lively Christmas tree because it was now dead.

Customers at the Costco in the suburbs of Los Angeles were blown away, and one man couldn’t help but post the rest of the details on Facebook.

“I can’t make this stuff up,” he wrote. “Woman in line at Costco, totally nonchalant, to return her Christmas tree ‘because it is dead’ on January 4.”

Amazingly, she actually did get her money back, according to the post. But not without a little bit of shaming from the store and other customers.

So something to keep in mind for next year, if your Christmas tree is “dead” after being chopped down a month before, you may be able to get a refund.

No point missed. Maybe the one on your head.

I have seen them bring back dirty, used sofas, well-worn shoes, dead arbovitae, and other used but not in good shape products and get a full refund.

It doesn't matter to Costco, they just charge everything back to the vendor.

They were never guaranteed to not break, they were just replaced if they did. I once used and broke an entire screwdriver set when I used them to wedge up a wall stud plate to clean up a flood.

The handles popped off each one. Instant replacement although clearly and admittedly not used for the intended purpose. Always use the right tool for the job...unless something else will work better.

There was a debacle weather-related large-scale power outage here in MA a few years ago. After power was restored to most of the state, I happened to be at Home Depot. I witnessed lined up outside over 100 brand new generators, each tagged as a return for defects.

It sickened me at the time, thinking I was going into a store being fleeced by scammers trying to “rent” for free a generator to get thru the power-outage, and how all their products are a tad more $’s to cover this krap.

My local Ace hardware store honors the Craftsman warranty. They don’t always have the replacement tool in stock but they will get it.

“not for anything, if she really needed the money so be it.”

My father once witnessed a man stealing my sister’s bicycle from our driveway. He did nothing to stop him, nor reported the theft.

He told me that if a man needed to steal a child’s bicycle he must be in pretty dire need. It wasn’t right, but not a situation worthy of direct involvement.

Costco probably didn’t want to deal with this person.

Years ago, I heard the story of a rich man who shipped his favorite Rolls Royce with him to England for a visit. His drive managed to his something and break the axle. The locals were quick to provide a replacement during the repair, and had his car back to him before his visit ended.

Once he got home, he realized they had never billed him. He made several inquiries, only to find no record of the repair. Finally, he called. The answer, “I am sorry sir! You must be mistaken. Rolls Royces do not break axles.”

The wife and I don’t have to worry about any of it: the purchase, the imported plastic trimmings and lights, the disposal/storage issues, or offending God (Jeremiah 10:1-8).

Last “Christmas tree” in our house: 1982

One less burdensome vanity. All things become new. Thank you Lord!

“She got her $60 back”

That price is highway robbery.

My local Ace hardware store politely refused to do so in the same circumstances. :(

Happens at our local Sams Club all the time. People bring back half eaten food(pie, turkey, cakes etc) basically leftovers and get full refunds. Basically dinner was free.No questions or shaming lest there be a scene. Usual suspects.

at this store you have to make the return even if its down to one spoonful of whatever in the jar. Crazy. and the coupon scamming is out of this world also.

Costco sells fresh cut trees. They come wrapped in netting, so picking a tree is interesting.

We’ve had Costco trees for the last four years. Always a beautiful tree that lasts a long time. Except for this year. The tree started dropping needles within a week. By Christmas, just touching the tree would cause an avalanche of needles. We were a little disappointing, but we’d never think of returning it.

Perhaps because there actually still is a Sears in my area they can get away with that, who knows.

It was only another five miles away, so I didn’t make a fuss.

Sometimes they don’t even bother with the return, they just take new shoes out of the box, put their worn out shoes back in the box, and walk out with the new shoes on their feet. Saves time if there is a line.
