Chief Wahoo’s departure puts Redskins in spotlight
The Washington Times ^ | Monday, January 29, 2018 | Matthew Paras

When criticism of the use of Native American imagery and names for sports teams escalated in recent years, Washington Redskins fans could always point to the Cleveland Indians and shrug, ‘“At least we don’t have Chief Wahoo.”

That argument lost a little potency Monday when the Indians announced the franchise, under pressure from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, is removing the buck-toothed caricature of a Native American from team uniforms beginning in 2019.

The Redskins have faced much of the same criticism as the Indians, and with Cleveland moving to further downplay Chief Wahoo, pressure on Washington owner Dan Snyder to change the team name, which some contend is racist, is likely to intensify.

Maybe the could use a slot machine or a roulette wheel for an authentic native American mascot.

Boycott the NFL until the Vikings drop their racist mascot. It makes all Norwegians look like blood thirsty savages.

There are so many offensive team names if we carry this to its conclusion:

Green Bay Packers is offensive to real meat packers.

Pittsburgh Steelers is offensive to real steel workers

New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Angels, and San Diego Padres are all offensive to the Catholic Church and other people of faith.

Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.

Minnesota Vikings offensive to Scandinavian people.

All the animal themed nicknames are offensive to the animals.

Milwaukee Brewers is offensive to real beer brewmasters.

Don’t forget the Oakland Raiders should be offensive to Spanish people as the Spanish were known for piracy and the Spanish had territory all over the SW and the 49ers represent the raping of the land for material wealth.

This kind of thing crosses boundaries. I will concede that the Chief Wahoo logo could raise hackles with those who feel depicted. In Halifax, Nova Scotia there is a big controversy. The founder of Halifax was Edward Cornwallis and there is a large statue to him downtown. He is not to be confused with Charles Cornwallis who surrendered to American revolutionary forces. This was in 1781, at Yorktown. The final defeat for Britain.

It is the Miq Maq tribe of native Indians who live in Nova Scotia. They want the statue taken down. They want the name Cornwallis removed as a street name. I believe there is a military/naval base that has the name.

I cannot think what good this does people. Perhaps they are led by activists who game the system with threats. Then a grant of filthy dollars. (Laughs).

Good points.

And speaking of pirates, then the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to change their names.

And I believe Ole Miss University in Mississippi call their sports teams the Rebels? Can’t have that rebel Confederate Civil War imagery going on either

2nd worse decision the U.S. has ever made was giving the Indians sovereign status. Forced them to assimilate and become Americans and join the melting pot. Now we have these tribes sucking off the taxpayer teat and having casinos to boot.

Milwaukee Brewers is offensive to real beer brewmasters.

Old Milwaukee is more offensive to drinkers of real beer.

Could always use the ‘Crying Indian’, whose parents were Italian immigrants....

Of course ‘whites’ played Indians in most of the Oaters back in the 50s

Guess sort of PC before it was invented...

All the ‘bad’ things that happened to the Indians in the flicks kind of had them ‘scared’ to use real Injuns.
(Burt Lancaster, Charles Bronson & Debra Paget come to mind)
