I had forgotten his name, but when the article mentioned Seasoned Citizen character actors, this is the guy I was thinking of.

Yesterday I saw Vigoda in an episode of Dark Shadows, shot in 1969, and he was very convincingly playing a ninety yr old! 5 yrs before Barney Miller he looked old as the hills!

I looked up his age, he was 56 when Barney Miller started. In 1969, he would have been 50.

The “Kick the Can” tale on the Twilight Zone show, was telecast just the other night (late, late night) on one of the channels I get the old TV shows. Remembered seeing it “way back when” and a number of times since in reruns. Its a great Twilight Zone episode.

He had heavy grey in his hair and huge grey eyebrow makeup plus coke bottle glasses...but he looked OLD AS HECK! If your math is correct then Vigoda would have been 6 or 7 years YOUNGER than Joan Bennett who headlined the series!
