I’ve never read or heard a bad syllable about Jack Benny.
Jack Benny was a class act all the way.
From the Wikipedia article on Eddie “Rochester” Anderson:
Soon after he (Anderson) became part of the permanent show cast, the program went on location to New York. When a couple from the South complained about staying in the same hotel as Anderson, the hotel manager tried to get him to find a room somewhere else.
Hilliard Marks, the show’s producer and also Jack Benny’s brother-in-law, told the manager that Anderson would leave the hotel the next day. When he did, Jack Benny and the entire radio show cast and crew totaling 44 people, joined Anderson in checking out of the hotel.

Two of my favorites are " George Washington slept Here" and "The Meanest Man In The World"
So many themes:
- his age
- his stinginess (the secret Vault!)
- Phil Harris’ drinking
- Rochester’s gambling
- Don Wilson’s weight
- Dennis Day’s quaint Irish idiocy
- his supposedly bad violin playing
- the racetrack tout, who gave him tips on everything but the horses
- Mary’s huge sister “Babe”
- Mel Blanc as the train station announcer “Now boarding at Track 5 for Anaheim, Azusa and Cucomonga

Rahh-chester...
I see what you did there
I still listen to Jack and all the fantastic radio programs from the golden days of radio on http://yesterdayusa.com/
Mel Blanc as the store clerk frustrated by helping Jack at Christmas year after year until he has a nervous breakdown.
I listen to him on Sirius Radio Classics where his show is still modern sounding whereas most of the other comedies are antiquated.
My favorite parts are glimpses of Rochesters life with his black friends. There was one time where he was talking about a lady friend and his growled Yeahhhhhh about her said a wicked lot!

“Jack Benny and other comedians of his era were also what comedians are supposed to be: funny. Todays comedians leave me unamused”
Anymore, humor is not humor unless someone is diminished by it. It has become an expression of hate and is a symptom of our rotting society.
The time I remember was when he was asked his Social Security Number, He replied: “1”
Thank you. I couldn’t remember the name. I remember also seeing “George Washington Slept Here”.
I remember hearing Rochester and Jack Benny on the radio when I was little. And Amos and Andy.
Us kids had to be quiet and behave when the programs started.
Around 1970, my brother was a waiter at the local hotel where Jack Benny stayed when he came into town for a performance. He delivered room service to Jack Benny’s room late one night.
After the meal was set up, Mr. Benny asked “Would you like tip?” He paused for a second and then deadpanned “Don’t play the ponies.”
As he left the room, Benny handed my brother a 30% tip.
...and for many years before that.
