I never have for a personal order—but a $700 order? That’s when you talk to the Manager and add something to the bill. I don’t care if it’s a church or a whore house. That’s just friggin stupid.

Are you talking about The Ritz or $49/night interstate special?

Sorry guy's a $700 bill....should be tipped.

And I've tipped take-out orders too.

You always tip based on the service that was done.

That would have been the prudent course.

I don’t agree. I tip well for table service, but I never tip for takeout. I have never heard of tipping for takeout, and I worked in a restaurant kitchen.

Correct. Tipping for takeout is a new on on me.

However, for a gigantic takeout order like this one, it's appropriate enough to tip, I believe.

But I've never considered it proper to tip for a routine takeout order. Heck, that's one of the reasons you place a takeout order—to avoid the tip associated with table service!

Have you ever filled a takeout order that large?

It’s not the same level of tipping. It’s more like tipping the staff for their time.

I guess for folks who’ve never done that, especially on short notice, might not get it. I guess the lesson learned should be not to go back there again. Because a “tip” on your food would be the least of your worries.

That's right. They're not standing around.

And if all they do is bag a meal to go, how much of a tip would that deserve that is not already expected for their wage?

I often tip 20%-25% for good table service for a meal where I'm there for 90 minutes. How much of a tip should someone get for the 10 minutes it takes to bag a to-go order?

Three years in a row my kids and I ate Christmas breakfast at the same waffle house (travelling). The first year I left a $20 tip and the 2nd year a $40 tip. Kind of a fun thing to do on that day of the year (at least for us).

The third year my oldest son was working a good paying job and together we left $75.

I have to agree - this is a difficult and disruptive order to prepare for any kitchen - especially a busy commercial chain. I’m surprised they actually took the order. OUTBACK is not really someplace you think of as a “to go” place. But for sure - some compensation for the loss of normal table work for the servers who assisted should have been added by management at the time of the order. The server missed the target. Not really the customers fault - she should have asked management to compensate her at a different rate, at least. Cooler heads may have prevailed.

$700? Is that a typical whorehouse tab?

Being intentionally obtuse?

bag a meal is not what we're talking about. Wake up and follow along. We're discussing a huge order. One that takes time. You DO understand the concept of time, don't you? It make take a couple minutes to take your ONE meal and bag it for your convenience. Now, multiply that by 25 to 50. Get the picture?

Rearranging the facts of a situation to fit an argument is a Liberal thing. Not one fit for FR.

Thank you so much for posting that. You put a huge smile on my face. Stuff like that is the best part of living!

Management isn’t always concerned with their staff. I know of one restaurant that taxes tips on a weekly basis, then applies that over slower periods to force the servers to compensate themselves for those slower periods with “tips” and thereby avoid having to raise their pay to the level of minimum wage. It’s a dodgey tactic and their turnover reflects that.

I doubt that this is the first time she never received a tip but since it was a church she probably felt that she would get a lot of sympathetic people on her side. Well she got at least one unsympathetic person and it was her boss. Bye bye.

Are you being intentionally hyperbolic? Why the hysterical generalities about Free Republic over a thread about tipping? That's the liberal thing around here.

Save it for the political threads.

I’m pretty sure this was the first time she ever had to assemble a huge order and been stiffed in the process. Church or not. Looking for anti-religious bias in all things is very unbecoming.

Sorry, bubba. I see it and call it as I see it. You intentionally misrepresent the facts and respond so. Therefore, your fake umbrage is duly noted.

I must say, the quality of FReepers has declined of late.
