Report: American Schools are teaching slavery poorly

Posted on 02/13/2018 6:12:01 AM PST by Bull Snipe

Consider this from a disturbing new report on how U.S. schools teach – or, rather don’t teach – students about the history of slavery in the United States. - only 8 % of U.S. high school seniors could identify slavery as the central cause of the Civil War; - 68 % of the surveyed students did not know that slavery formally ended only with an amendment to the Constitution; - only 22 % of the students could correctly identify how provisions in the Constitution gave advantages to slaveholders; - and only 44 % of the students answered that slavery was legal in all colonies during the American Revolution. From an article in the Daily Press, 2/13/18.

And 100% of liberals do not understand that the 3/5th compromise actually limited the power of the slave owning south.

Did they teach about the black slave holders in the South?

American (public) schools are (intentionally) teaching everything poorly.

this is wrong... its the opposite, so even the people chastising people for getting it wrong got it wrong... the constitution did NOT give advantages to slaveholders but took away advantages by not allowing slaves to be counted as full people and so not allowing slaveholders to breed greater representation in the house and senate... of course the racialists out of trotskies permanent war book, want to make this a statement about blacks and not a statement that when a man owns another man that other man is diminished but when not owned he stands full... no, they would rather the slaves had full count, so that slave holders could double representation... something the north couldnt to

besides... i doubt i will see the lives matter movement protest against people like NATTY BUTLER...

The left controls textbooks. They always claimed the the north started the war and it was about states rights.

Around 17 years ago I was at a mechanics garage where they were fixing my car and while I was waiting I was talking to this black guy who worked there, he must have been around 19 or 20, newly indoctrinated and we were discussing Presidents and I told him Lincoln was a Republican and he absolutely refused to believe it, absolutely refused. He insisted all through school he was constantly told Lincoln was Democrat, Republicans started slavery, were against Civil rights. This was in New York city by the way, 17 years ago so try to imagine what it’s like now after 8 years of Obama. This is why you got all these kids today completely out of their mind, thinking the USA is the great big enemy, that Republicans are evil, criminals are great. The media and education: Those two create ALL the problems we face today as a nation. We got all these people today who grew up completely misinformed and then with a media that KEEPS them misinformed and when you tell them the truth, they can’t accept it. They just cannot believe they’ve been lied to all through childhood to adulthood

I disagree with this premise. The war was not fought to free the slaves.

You could further have blown away his mind if you had said MLK was a republican, reputedly.

Slaves were property. They were not considered people in terms of having rights and needing services and protections from the government. Allowing them to count as 3/5ths of a person for the purposes of Congressional representation was 3/5ths too many, and gave the slave states a disproportionately high number of seats in Congress.

It was fought to preserve slavery, so the statement is correct.

“I disagree with this premise. The war was not fought to free the slaves.”

I’m just old enough to remember having an American History teacher in middle school teach the same thing.

Although now that I think about it, he wasn’t the “really cool” History teacher all the “smart” kids raved about, because they took Latin with their advanced classes and my parents insisted I take Spanish with mine, and the History class schedules would have otherwise conflicted.

Correct, but slavery was a central cause. The South wanted to expand it to the new territories AND the south felt it was being treated unfairly because the could not compete with northern industries. They also feared that a Republican president could eventually seek the emancipation of the slaves - not trusting assurances to the contrary.

And, no lesson ever taught the reason that Africans were enslaved by other Africans.

The slavers were superior to the slaves

True.

The South wanted to count slaves as full persons but the North insisted on counting slaves as zero. The respective arguments were to both sides’ economic and political best self interest. It is possible that if the South's nascent attempt to view slaves as full human beings had been encouraged the North's perceived need to later attack and destroy their regional rivals could have been avoided.

But the North insisted so the South - as they would do many times to preserve the Union created by Washington, Lee, Jefferson, Madison, Mason - agreed to the 3/5 compromise which harmed their (South's) best self interests.

If that is correct, how did the slave state of Maryland preserve their slavery by fighting the slave state of Virginia?

How did the slave state of Kentucky preserve their slavery by fighting the slave state of Tennessee?

How did the slave state of Missouri preserve their slavery by fighting the slave state of Arkansas?

How did the slave state of Delaware preserve their slavery by fighting the slave state of North Carolina?

How did the slave state of West Virginia preserve their . . .

LOL! There was no "nascent attempt" to view slaves as humans. Just a crass political ploy to obtain more power in government than their population called for. As it was, they settled for half a loaf. Or rather 3/5ths of one. Not the first compromise the North made to try and satisfy the South, but one of the few the South would accept.

They retained their slaves until they ended slavery within their borders on their own. Or when it was ended once and for all by the 13th Amendment.

And we know the South rebelled in order to protect their institution of slavery because there are plenty of quotes from the Southern leaders of the time saying as much.

How many know it was a black man who went to court to initially make slavery legal?

How many know Europeans and Natives were also enslaved?

How many know Lincoln freed slaves in a territory he didn’t have power over but did NOT free slaves in the land he lead?

How many know federal and state governments profited from the illegal slave trade?
