The legends of the Jersey Devil stretch back hundreds of years, and like many such legends are a mixture of half-truths, twisted perspective, and blurry recollections.
Sightings of this apparently mythical creature continue today, however, leading some to suspect there may be more to the accounts than just mere stories.
Before we look at the origins of one of Americas strangest and most enduring legends, check out the video below. It looks at the basics of the Jersey Devil legends.

That photo is idiotic. That creature couldn’t fly with a body that big and wings that small.

In college I read a book on the Jersey Devil and was interested to read about something they referred to as "Devil week". Multiple sightings all over South Jersey. Since I am a Jersey native and had access to Rutgers newspaper archives, I decided to look up the news reports from those days. Many reports by many people in different locations, all pretty similar. Some pretty vivid, like a creature devouring a dog and being chased off by a cop who shot at it. The prints in the snow resembled hooves. Delusion? Dunno. But something ate that dog. Anyway it was pretty interesting.
Some info on all that: https://www.app.com/story/news/history/erik-larsen/2015/01/17/week-jersey-devil-came-woods/21925337/

The sightings werent in the pines. Burlington, haddonfeild, collingswood. Places close to Philly and well west of the pines. And the witnesses said it flew off, boars dont fly. Mass delusions happen, could have in that case. But usually now spread over such a wide area. A curious series of incidents.

What they say about Bigfoot is that there’d have to be a population of them to keep the species going. There couldn’t just be one or two. And if there were several hundred Bigfeet out there we’d know about it by now. This creature would be smaller, but I wonder if something similar isn’t true about them.

Wife and a few friends, while high school seniors about sixty years ago, went looking for the Jersey Devil one evening "out beyond Basto" - didn't find much of anything but they did get a flat tire and had to walk home - got back at two in the morning and "we were in a lot of trouble" - swears there was no drinking or other hanky-panky involved - couldn't have been too much of a scandal since one of the members of the party went on to be elected town mayor years later - anyhow, she says, she's glad they didn't run into these guys -

I grew up in South Jersey and heard many a Jersey Devil story. Lots of books written about the Devil but most are just rehashing the same old same old now.

First thing I thought of when I saw the headline was the old X-Files episode on the New Jersey Devil. A classic.
