The Coen brothers said that this was their comedic homage films like “The Big Sleep” or other Raymond Chandler stories with plots that don’t always make sense but have interesting characters and snappy dialogue.
Some call him the Dude. I prefer El Duderino because Im not into the whole brevity thing.
That sounds more like Fargo
Because Jeff Bridges is a sexy mofo no matter what he’s doing. All the women want to do him, all the men want to be him.
I liked The Big Lebowski but, really man, was it half as funny as Raising Arizona?
I’ve watched parts of it until I fell asleep. Hence, can’t even describe the plot. Mark of a bad flick.
One of the few children of a Hollywood star who out shined his parent’s career significantly.
No disparagement of Lloyd intended.
At its heart it’s a Sam Spade-style detective film. The Maltese Falcon with bowlers.
Hahahahahah! I watched the movie many years ago, but couldt get through it.
I watched it last year, and found it completely odd, quirky, and kind of fun to watch. As other posters have pointed out, there isnt any real theme.
And the scene where he walks into the womans art studio and she comes swooping out of the ceiling hit my funny bone so hard I had my drink come out of my nose!!!!!
I can’t explain why, but it’s just one of those movies I’ve seen over and over and still love it every time.

Its right up there with Blazing Saddles and Airplane for me. It has everything to build an entertaining story from- bowling, an aging hippie in a bathrobe, bunny and her sugar daddy fraud, a pederast with an over inflated bowlers ego, Smokey, a cowboy muse, an iron lung, Donnie, Ben Gazarra as a charming and sleazy porn King, Julie Ann Moore flying nekkid, Walter and his M1911, a Folgers can, Caucasians and best of all- German Nihilists!
I never judge someone by what they like.
The Big Lebowski is a film I saw in theaters when it came out, but never really enjoyed it. Until I saw it in re-runs on cable.
It grows on you, if you give it a chance.
Maybe similar to Star Trek, TOS. Nobody but geeks liked it when it came out and it got low ratings, but when it went into syndication in the '70s, it became REALLY popular.
Big Trouble in Little China!!!!!
Karl Hungus.
I want to go like Donny, in a Folger’s can.
Say what you will about it, at least it’s an ethos ...
STFU Donny!
