Swedish-Born Electronic Music DJ Avicii Dies at 28
KTLA ^ | 11:25 April 20, 2018 | Wire report

Grammy nominated Swedish DJ Avicii died Friday, his publicist confirmed.

He was 28.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii," a statement read. "He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given."

Avicii was one of the most successful touring DJs in the industry, working with artists including Madonna. He had a crossover pop hit in 2013 with "Wake Me Up." The song ranked as Spotify's most-streamed song of all time in 2014, according to Billboard.

Spotify estimated at the time that the song was listened to 850,000 times a day on average.

But he also saw the downside of fame in the electronic dance music genre known as EDM.

"It's very easy to become too attached to partying," he told Rolling Stone last year. "You become lonely and get anxieties. It becomes toxic."

He retired from performing in 2016 after a string of health issues, including acute pancreatitis.

Avicii told Time in 2013 that the illness was caused by excessive drinking.

"Yeah I was drinking way too much, partying in general way too much," he said. "Then I got a pancreatitis attack [at 21], which is very rare. So that forced me to do a 180 and stop drinking."

The DJ explained in a 2017 posting on his site that he had no intention of giving up music completely, writing "We all reach a point in our lives and careers where we understand what matters the most to us."

"For me it's creating music," he wrote. "That is what I live for, what I feel I was born to do."

Avicii also wrote that he was heading back into the studio to make more art.

"The next stage will be all about my love of making music to you guys. It is the beginning of something new," his posting said. "Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do."

He released an EP called “Avicii” in August 2017.

Fellow musicians took to social media on Friday to mourn his death.

"Devastating news about Avicii, a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do," fellow superstar DJ Calvin Harris tweeted. "My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim."

[Verse 1]
I took a pill in Ibiza
To show Avicii I was cool
And when I finally got sober, felt 10 years older
But it was something to do
I’m living out in LA
I drive a sports car just to prove
I’m a real big baller cause I made a million dollars
And I spend it on girls and shoes

[Chorus]
But you don’t wanna be high like me
Never really knowing why like me
You don’t ever wanna step off that roller coaster
And be all alone
You don’t wanna ride the bus like this
Never knowing who to trust like this
You don’t wanna be stuck up on that stage singing
Stuck up on that stage singing
All I know are sad songs, sad songs
Darling, all I know are sad songs, sad songs

[Verse 2]
I’m just a singer who already blew his shot
I get along with old timers
Cause my name’s a reminder of a pop song people forgot
And I can’t keep a girl, no
Cause as soon as the sun comes up
I cut ‘em all loose and work’s my excuse
But the truth is I can’t open up

yeah, sounds like something sinister.

I know Oman is a peaceful Muslim nation (seriously, it is), but there is likely something not good about this death.

The devil said, “Meh... I’m only making you a D.J., not a *real* musician... I’ll give you an extra year.”

Party till you die. Excessive drinking.

For a while Boston had an electoronic music station, Evolution 101.7 “All Things Dance”. A drug popular with those at EDM shows was known as Molly, so I thought: Molly 101.7, All Things Overdose. (There were some overdoses at EDM shows).

The station switched to country and is doing well. The EDM is on the HD2 signal of 101.7

I knew nothing about him. I think he was more than just a DJ who played other folks music. I think he also introduced a couple of new acts to the public, and was a well liked media figure. We have people like that here, or in other generations. Every generation has it’s own inspirational personalities. This fellow had already messed his stomach up with heavy alcohol consumption before he was 21 y/o.

Some groups are meant for whoever is still growing up at that time. I never got into groups like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Hootie and the Blowfish, but many others did. I wasn’t into Coldplay, except for one song., “If I could rule the world” which is a stunning and stirring song, perfectly orchestrated, from beginning to end.

EDM - video game sounds through a sequencer, drum machine, sampled vocal clips, and the haze of Molly. No real musicianship.

Even sludgy Norwegian black metal sounds better (no Varg please).

I know Oman is a peaceful Muslim nation (seriously, it is), but there is likely something not good about this death.

He's had a long history of alcoholism. Some people's bodies just can't take it. Grateful Dead keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan died of alcohol-related health issues at 27. GnR bassist Duff McKagen barely survived alcohol-related pancreatitis at age 30.

You're right about Oman. Most friendly people I've ever met. Beautiful country.

It’s the EDM pop culture. “I just wanna party party party and get drunk drunk drunk”, a summation of pop “songs” by Ke$ha. Party hard and burn out.
