By the time I was six, I was changing my own diaper.

So, teach the young clods about the big hand and the little hand.
My 7 year old grandson can tell time with an analog clock.

yet, when I went to replace my digital watch a few years ago, everything was analog. Analog was the new fashion.

The big hand is on the “6”, and the little hand is between the “10” and the “11”.

My students can’t do it either. I used to try to teach them, but they were uninterested in learning and actively resisted it. Like cursive (I tried to teach them that too.) Since I’m supposed to be teaching 9th grade literature, I eventually gave up, and stuck to what I’m supposed to be teaching them, but I hope their parents get what’s coming to them.

We have a Grandfather’s clock and I was able to use it to teach my 3 year-old daughter how to tell time. It all began when she asked why the clock was making a noise every so often and what that sound meant.

My last check ride in an Aztec D found me on one engine, in an unusual attitude, wth no panel except a compass, vertical speed indicator, and an ADF. I was told to find my position and navigate to the closest airport with a suitable length runway.

Out came my stop watch, slide wheel, pencils, and paper charts.

I wonder in the future how you explain to them the 10 and 2 o’clock position of their hands on the steering wheel.

One should be able to teach a school kid to tell time within two to five minutes depending on aptitude.

By the time that I was in First Grade, I learned how to tell time. It isn’t that blasted difficult, kiddies.

At the young age of 10, I had a paper route. Because of this, my mother taught me to count back change properly.

Now, it's just fun to mess with them.

Them: That comes to $4.37.
Me: Okay, here's $5.12.
Them: Uh...

And you can bet that “making change” is also an insurmountable task.

How stupid can they be though? I remember my class and me being taught and mastering this in a single day when I was in second grade. Like the teacher broke us into groups, we learned how the numbers go in increments of five, etc., then took a quiz, and that was the end of it. A very short lesson that sticks with you for life, like tying shoes.

Ah yes paper routes. Do kids have paper routes anymore?

In my area anyway, all paper delivery is done by adults in trucks or vans.

Somebody told me that due to child labor laws, and concerns about child molesters, newspapers converted delivery into an adult occupation only.

If I was in an Aztec D with only one engine, my attitude would be a little unusual as well ...

Sadly, out college straight A engineering son couldn’t read my analogue clock with roman numerals in my home office. It took 10 minutes to teach him roman numerals 1 through XII, the analog face number positions, the three hands and how to read them, drill him down, and test him.

10 minutes. School doesn’t do this anymore.
