Minimum-wage protesters take Fight for $15 to McDonald’s West Loop headquarters (Chicago)

In the midst of a deluge, protesters in disposable ponchos stood outside McDonald’s gleaming new headquarters in the West Loop Monday morning and booed.

“I put in leg work day in and day out so that they can sit in this building … so that they can send their children to the best schools, so they never have to worry at night!” shouted Mary Hood, a protester and manager at a McDonald’s restaurant in the city.

Protests outside McDonald’s by the “Fight for $15” movement in favor of a higher minimum wage have been going on for years.

But this was the first outside the new nine-story headquarters, previously the site of Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios.

Dozens of chanting marchers moved along the sidewalk outside the new building, 1035 W. Randolph St.

“McDonald’s, McDonald’s, you can’t hide! We can see your greedy side!” they chanted as they passed the McDonald’s restaurant and also crowded outside the employee entrance.

Workers getting off an employee shuttle hustled past them and squeezed into the door.

A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said the corporation helps its employees better themselves in a number of ways.

In other news: Protestor's cause fifteen McD's to be fired so the other five can have their $15/hr. Guess they showed them.

Or maybe MacD's lowered those that were being paid $20/hr down to $15/hr to comply.

I would raise it to $15 and then immediately shut the business down. Nothing will ever be enough for them.

We go to McDonald’s less and less frequently. It has gotten so a meal for 2 is nearing $20. We can get much better food for that price at many other restaurants.

If they all have to make $15/hour, and the price of a meal goes up to $12-15 per person, no one will go there, and the employees will not have to worry about the hourly rates.

Used my first ordering kiosk last month...LOVED IT. Your jobs are like your ponchos...disposable. Who bussed you in? Took me YEARS to get my first $15 an hour job...and I had to earn it by doing more than flipping burgers. EARN it by offering more to your employer!

One wonders where so-called low paid workers get the money for those pricey banners.

And a lot ot “them” started out in jobs just like yours, idiot, and then got educated and improved themselves.

That’s how it’s done.

This is about union organizing. Unions exempt themselves from the minimum wage, then tell employers if they go union they can pay less.

Meanwhile more jobs at the bottom rung disappear.
