Its not really Star Wars anymore. Its just Disney putting together movies based on Star Wars but without its essense.

I can tell you why it was such a flop at the box office. The torrent sites had it on opening day.

The reason this is significant is the target audience of this movie; kids, teens, and young people in general, know how to access and download these torrents.

They watched it on their big flat screen tv at home with surround sound. Had the special effects been really good; some would have seen it again at the theater but they weren’t. I thought the movie was better than The Last Jedi though but I’m not sure that’s saying a lot.

I think in the not-too-distant future; opening movies will be available for streaming for a nominal fee from protected outlets that won’t let someone copy the movie.

Another thing hampering ticket sales is people using high quality video cameras to video tape a live movie at a theater then posting it on the dark web or to a torrent site. This is done in other countries; probably where the person doing the recording can simply bribe the theater staff or it might even be the theater staff doing it.

The studios have a big problem and some serious decisions to make about how this will play out going forward. Going after all the copyright infringement isn’t working too well so far. This is why I think they will opt to get in on streaming it for a price. Of course there will be those who video tape the movie on their big screen tv with surround sound then upload it to a torrent site. The quality won’t be as good as the original but would be passable to watch. You can see why this is a big problem for the studios.

I went this weekend as well. Pretty much had the theater to ourselves. I agree the movie is good, but it isn’t good enough to draw in non-Star Wars fans.

As for actors/characters, IMO Emilia Clarke & Donald Glover both were wasted. I felt both did what they could with the scripts they were handed. Woody Harrelson pretty much saves the movie with his performance. Everyone else pretty much does what you’d expect. (If this is the movie Ron Howard “fixed”, WTH was the original movie? We’ll never know.)

Delete a couple minutes of scenes with L3-37 and Lando, and the really goofy sexual plot device goes away. Never should have been filmed, much less making it into a final cut. Adds nothing except SJW virtue-signaling.

Not a bad date-night movie, really. There are worse ones out there. But I fully understand why people are making noises about this movie killing the franchise. Rouge One annoyed me with the hackneyed editing into a supercut of A New Hope. The Last Jedi annoyed me with twisting the stuffing out of Luke Skywalker’s character. Solo annoys me for going pretty much nowhere in a hurry. YMMV.

It was a really fantastic movie...I do not understand why it is failing. I loved it.

That, and the fact this storyline makes Solo out to be a pussy worshiping beta orbiter to the main female character. Its his primary motivation. Thats what they reduce the character to.

So what is the problem with the movie? Must be something?

A bit of unsolicited trivia. Michael Crichton is the only person to have the #1 TV show, movie, and book at the same time.

Back when they used to make “family” movies they didnt generally cast male or female leads who had already appeared fully nude in prior movies. And back then there were no regular series shows where they apeared nude, cable or network. Morality clauses existed.

Natalie Portman only did more adult/mature stuff AFTER she had done the SW films.

I think it’s at the point where most people think that if a movie isn’t worth plopping down the $20+ for the theater, they’ll just wait for it to become available for home viewing. I suspect that’s what many are thinking about this one. Eventually Star Wars fans will watch it, just not in a theater.

Star wars fans are boycotting it without giving it a chance. I’m disappointed. I came out of the theater already looking forward to the sequel. Now because fans won’t give it a chance, this really fun film is failing.

Besides the crap Disney influence it appears the studio has hit peak star wars market saturation.

“Didn’t help that they cast somebody who looks nothing like Harrison Ford”

You nailed it - they chose a baby-faced pajama boy. It was an idiotic decision.

Ashamedly, I believed the negative hype too, but saw it online from a streaming site a few days after it debuted. Quality was poor, but the film made me realize i had been duped by the negativity.

Go out and watch it. Agree with the poster here who said Rogue One was really, good, and to me this is equally good with the benefit of having familiar characters.

3 big nerd movies in a row and 5 months after the previous Star Wars. Time and money are finite, people gotta make decisions. 1 a year was pushing it, 2 in 5 months is just dumb.
