I think many here missed there was a crowd some of which got within 15 feet. Bison crossed the walkway and got agitated. Doesn’t say this lady got that close - until the attack.
I have witnessed people actually separating mamma grizz from her two cubs to take pictures . Luckily a ranger showed up and called in back up .
When people act stupid, I move away.

As someone who grew up around bison, this angers me. These people have no respect for the nature of animals. The people think they were put on this earth for humans to look at, feed, pet, and take pictures on. Basically for human amusement. These people that get attacked in Yellowstone deserve all they get.
I’m from Montana and if I saw that . . . well let’s just say, she’d no longer have a camera. Don’t care if I’d have to spend the night in jail.

Worked with a guy who survived an attack when he stumbled upon a wild buffalo when hiking alone in Utah. He tried backing slowly away but the animal would move towards him when he did. When he was standing still, the animal would just graze and ignore him. He thought he would just wait for the animal to wander away since it wouldn’t let him move.
After about 10 or so minutes the buffalo raised his head up and decided to charge. Flipped him completely over his head. My friend landed flat on his back and when he looked up a big eye was right in his face. He got up and took off running. Long story short, he ended up pretty beat up with broken ribs and a punctured lung. Fish and wildlife officer said it was rare for the person to survive a wild buffalo attack.
Pretty wild story.

I picture in my mind a bowling alley.
In the case of a buffalo in the campground, grazing, ignoring everyone, sometimes it’s best to go about one’s business. A case of “you don’t bother me, I don’t bother you”. On one of my hikes, some coyotes trotted past me, paid me no mind. I have walked past javelinas where they just look at me and then go about their foraging. I have seen where people do stupid stuff. One case where a New York yuppie got too close to a javelina like it was a pet. The javelina charged at him. Fortunately for him it was just enough to get him to keep his distance.
No, the grizzlies are not interested in the pic a nic basket. There are places where humans are not at the top of the food chain.
This is why I stay away from any bisons that wander into my yard.
Early one morning I was putting a suitcase in my trunk in the Yellowstone Lodge parking lot. I heard a funny noise behind me and when I turned around I was facing a bison’s head about 10 feet from me, looking straight at me. I just froze, I think it was just “curious” as to what I was doing or what I was. Finally, it turned and walked away. But to think something THAT BIG could come that close and I didn’t know it ... it still frightens me a little years later. But to purposely walk up to one of those things ... she’s lucky she only got gored!
