DEARBORN, Mich. - A pit bull attacked its owner in Dearborn as a horrified Animal Control officer looked on, according to officials.
The incident happened after neighbors complained about the dog and an Animal Control officer was sent to the owner's home.
Signs at the front of the home give a fair warning of what to expect, and neighbors said trouble with the owner's dogs is not a surprise.
"I hate to say it, but it's been building up," neighbor Lela Warren said. "These dogs have gotten out several times. The neighbor right here's had that dog in his backyard, snarling at him."
On Monday afternoon, before the attack, an Animal Control officer approached the owner, who was in the backyard of his home with the pit bull.
"Animal Control peeked over the fence, I guess just to kind of see this dog, and the dog went after her," Warren said.
The owner apparently pulled the dog back to restrain it, and the pit bull attacked him, injuring both of his arms. He is expected to recover.
"All of a sudden, the dog, I guess, turned on him," neighbor Austin Ramos said. "All we saw was him flailing around behind the fence there. He was just going, 'No, no no,' and at some point, he goes, 'Shoot it. Shoot it. Shoot it.'"
The pit bull was put down Monday afternoon, officials said.
"The owner's great," Ramos said. "The owner's a great guy. He's always careful to keep the dog behind the fence and whatnot, but I guess just this time, it turned on him. He was covered in blood. His arms were all cut up.

My family just lived through this. I was on the road while it happened.
Two neighborhood kids were working on our front yard. My four year old was playing in the game room fortunately. My wife brought our six month old puppy (a german shepherd - beagle mix ... high energy, but wouldn’t hurt a fly) out front to meet the kids. They were playing with her. She was on a leash and being handled by my wife.
Our neighbor lives in front of us ... about 50 yards down a hill ... The pit bull saw the puppy, went nuts, got free of his leash (pulled the thing up out of the ground), charged up the hill, and attacked my wife, one of the kids, and our puppy. The owner had to run up the hill and literally smother his dog to get it under control.
She called me after she dropped out son off with her sister and went to the hospital ... I drove home pretty fast (I was about 3 hours away).
My wife was bitten four times on her arm. The kid had one bad bite. The puppy dove in front of my wife to try and fight the pit bull off. The puppy got some bad lacerations on her legs and needed a lot of stitches. The puppy was beat up pretty bad and we still have to run her to the vets to insure none of her lacerations/bites become infected. We aren’t out of the woods just yet.
Here’s the sick part.
It seems our neighbor muzzles the dog with a ball gag. My wife would see the dog always running around, but not barking and she swears that the dog was always playing with a red ball. We found the ball in our front yard. The owner keeps the dog gagged with the ball (a soft, spongy ball)
This is nothing compared to what can happen. Those dogs, if not trained and handled properly, can and will attempt to kill. It’s their nature.
I know there are pit bull lovers out there. See, the thing is, you love that breed of dog. You know how to train and control them. I like Chow Chows ... they’re frigging vicious if not handled properly. I cannot handle them, so I will not own one.
Unfortunately, MANY people adopt pit bulls not knowing what in the hell they’re getting into. My neighbor is an example of this kind of person. He is not a bad man, but he made a *BIG* mistake. Had my four year old been outside, I shudder to think what might have happened.
I’ll also say this. I haven’t been around dogs much in my life. We got our puppy since my son loves dogs and she was a perfect fit for our family. She’s already 50 pounds and still growing, but she is a dopey mass of love for lack of better terms :-). Hearing about a six month old dog attempting to fight off a frigging pit bull instantly made me get why people fall into a crazy kind of love with their dogs. They are amazing animals and I love our dog to death (unless she’s in “I need attention” mode ... though she’s getting trained for that :-) ).
Anyway, thought I’d throw that out there given the thread ... I don’t know what to do next from a legal standpoint ... what a mess.
I have been thinking about the owners of these dogs lately.
And other “pit bull apologists” that attack and call names and insult and threaten on social media those who question the need for someone to own as a pet animals that have been bred to attack, maul, and kill without warning.
I have tentatively come to the opinion that it is at least partially supernatural, that these persons are under evil influence, and at some level, love bloodlust and death. I see no other reasonable explanation at this time.
I - and others of similar opinions on these dogs - when speaking out, then become the subject of personal attack and insult for holding these opinions.
So, I have begun praying for these persons. And for the victims of their animals’ attacks. And that a gracious and loving God will protect the victims and heal them, and change the hearts and minds of these persons who believe that the life of an animal is of more value than that of a human.

pit bull attackIf you, your pet, your friend or family member are the victim of a pit bull attack, follow these recommended steps.
1. Contact the media. They want to know and they need to know. Have a friend or family member coordinate media calls and interviews if you are in shock. Police, animal control, hospitals and vets have privacy laws preventing them from initiating media contact. Only by making your attack public can you change things for others.
2. At the time of the attack, ask witnesses to take cell phone photos and videos. Photograph the attack, injuries to people and animals, and evidence of the owner’s negligence (broken leash, no collar or leash, etc.) Many cases have been lost because victims could not produce visual records of broken leashes, etc. Provide your email address and ask that all photos and videos be sent to you.
3. Ask people for help collecting names, phone numbers and emails (or business cards) from witnesses to the attack.
4. Seek medical assistance even for small injuries, and request copies of the medical records. Photograph all injuries immediately.
5. Call both the police and the animal control in your city to report the incident. Be sure to get the file numbers. If only animal services attends the attack, follow up with a report to your local police and get the case number. If the dog owner has broken local laws, you need to make a police report as well.
REPORT ALL ATTACKS even if your attack resulted in a minor injury. Many cities have a “one bite rule”. Your claim on record will be vital evidence the next time the dog bites or attacks.
pit bull attack6. Make a record of the names of all law enforcement officials who attended the scene or collected information afterwards. You will need this later if you pursue a civil suit.
7. If you need more information after the attack, see if the area has a Block Watch group that will assist you in contacting neighbors.
8. Ask around to see if neighbors have had any problems with the same dog. Did it bite other neighbors, their children or other dogs? Has your city’s animal control center issued citations or warnings to your neighbor concerning the violent tendencies of her dog? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you may have the basis of a legitimate claim for personal injury and property damage.
9. Keep detailed records of damages. Damages can include your medical bills, lost wages, expenses for medications, torn clothing, and other personal property damaged during a dog attack. In cases of dog-on-dog aggression, damages include reimbursement for veterinary bills, dog medications and kennel fees. In cases of fatal dog attacks, damages may extend to include the replacement cost of a deceased dog.
pit bull attack10. Keep a detailed record of PTSD symptoms. If you seek professional help, ask the therapist/counselor to keep records of your visits. In most areas you have up to two years to file a civil suit. The PTSD may last much longer than you expect. It is important to start getting help soon after the attack.
11. Keep copies of medical and veterinary bills and records, receipts for medications, and replacement costs for torn clothes or other personal property like jewelry, computers or cell phones damaged during the attack. If you were hurt and had to miss work, ask your employer for a written letter verifying the dates and times you were absent and the amount of wages you lost as a result.
12. You will be asked to complete a form with information about the attack. Be very careful to be very clear about exactly what happened. Fill it out right away so you remember the details. But do not submit it before having a professional assess your comments. The prosecutor will use the information on your form together with recommended charges by animal services to decide if there is a legal case or not, and you may not have another chance to state what happened.
13. Expect the attacking dog to be taken by Animal Control to confinement. The owner may choose to have the dog euthanized. If not, Animal Control will have it assessed for aggressive behavior.
In areas without breed legislation, it is more difficult to make a case because dogs are considered property. Only with repeated attacks can your local authorities act, so again be sure you report it, if only to help the next person.
pit bull attack14. If the city or county does not press charges against the dog owner, you can proceed with a legal claim against the owner. This is called a civil suit. In response, the owner may initiate legal action to keep the dog. In this case, the dog may be in the care of the city for many months.
15. Consult a lawyer to determine how long you have before you need to file a civil claim. In many areas, you can file a claim for a pit bull attack for up to two years after the event. Always contact law firms for a consultation even if you don’t have the money to hire them. Many law firms will work on contingency on your behalf.

Your comment makes me wonder what would happen if Pitbull the Rapper were to decide to run for political office.
Hmmmm. Neither the article or the comments so far say that pit bulls are ‘misunderstood’, a word that all of the pit bull apologists seem to you use in defending the breed. Like my friend and neighbor who had her hand bitten by one.
I very much hope that your friend and neighbor sustained no permanent damage from the bite.
It is possible that apologists are becoming aware that the term “misunderstood” is inaccurate in the extreme, and that the general public is becoming aware of the awful human and animal price of indiscriminate pit bull advocacy.
The same reason people have lions, tigers, bears, gators, humongous snakes, power, and the ability to intimidate and put real fear in others. These people hate people many times even their own family members whom they daily put in danger because of the loving and playful________ (insert the name of a wild animal here).

1> It was already reported to the police and the local animal control authorities. Animal control working with us. They are not happy with the owner (and I am being nice saying that :-) ).

I don’t know if this actually warrants getting the media involved. When you see these kinds of attacks on TV, you get pissed off. When they happen to you, the best way to describe it is that you feel like you’ve been hit in the head with a blunt instrument and you’re in a daze ... it’s surreal to say the least.
One problem is that these people think they’re smarter than everyone else. They’re not.
I also believe that if a pitbull attacks another person or pet, the pitbull owner should be sued for pain & suffering. They should be at risk of losing everything they have.

Do not talk to the owner or his family members

I have a family with pit bulls next door to me at the RV park I stay at while working in the oil patch. They have a male, female and a pup from her litter. The male is young, big, full of testosterone, and overall nasty. They put up a five-foot high metal fence anchored with steel driven fence posts and anchored further to the three foot chain link fence separating lots in the RV Park. The hose faucet to my RV is located next to the fence and each time I turn it on or off he attacks the fence trying to get at me.
A couple of months ago, the woman had a baby who is too young yet to be outdoors. Given the attitude of the male pit bull, I worry what might happen when their youngster becomes a toddler. Even though the dog may consider him/her family, they can be unpredictable if something or someone excites them and that anger happens to transfer to a tyke who may be in the yard. The above story is another example of that type of typical behavior of that breed.
Here in the southwest, having a pit bull is a status symbol for a certain group of the population. They (and Chihuahuas) are the most common breed of dog that end up at the shelter due to being turned in, abandonment or escape from the owner.

Very common response. This is an emotional, and very possibly physical and medical shock. If anyone involved here(vicims, family and friends, to include the dog’s owner) has chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart issues, high blood pressure, or epilepsy (to name a few) it’s best to keep a close eye on blood sugar, blood pressure, meds, and food and water intake. Forgetting to eat or drink can cause issues with all of the above.
