SAN FRANCISCO — Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton made a surprise visit to a private, all girls school in San Francisco on Friday and spoke at its 8th grade graduation ceremony.
Clinton rolled up to the Hamlin School in Pacific Heights at about 9:45 a.m. after the Secret Service arrived minutes earlier, clearing the area, according to a report on ABC 7.
Clinton’s appearance had been rumored for several days, family members of students posted on Twitter, but it was not formally announced or publicized. The school did post a video of faculty members rehearsing America the Beautiful before the graduation.
Hamlin’s head of school could not be reached Friday afternoon.
Mary Powell, the grandmother of a graduate, told ABC-7 that Clinton’s appearance was “thrilling. I think San Francisco is a very warm place for the secretary to come. She is going to be greeted very enthusiastically. I think the kids are going to be over the top in terms of what she has to tell them.”
A granddaughter of Clinton’s close friend Democratic donor and activist Susie Tompkins Buell was among the school’s graduates, ABC-7 reported.
Clinton was in San Francisco to pick up a leadership award Thursday night from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Pro-gun groups spent millions of dollars in opposing her 2016 presidential bid.
