Baking Soda: For Cooking, Cleaning, And Kidney Health?

A daily dose of sodium bicarbonate—baking soda, already used for baking, cleaning, acid indigestion, sunburn, and more—slows the decline of kidney function in some patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), reports an upcoming study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). "This cheap and simple strategy also improves patients' nutritional status, and has the potential of translating into significant economic, quality of life, and clinical outcome benefits," comments Magdi Yaqoob, MD (Royal London Hospital).

The study included 134 patients with advanced CKD and low bicarbonate levels, also called metabolic acidosis. One group received a small daily dose of sodium bicarbonate in tablet form, in addition to their usual care. For this group, the rate of decline in kidney function was greatly reduced—about two-thirds slower than in patients. "In fact, in patients taking sodium bicarbonate, the rate of decline in kidney function was similar to the normal age-related decline," says Yaqoob.

Rapid progression of kidney disease occurred in just nine percent of patients taking sodium bicarbonate, compared to 45 percent of the other group. Patients taking sodium bicarbonate were also less likely to develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD) requiring dialysis.

Patients taking sodium bicarbonate also had improvement in several measures of nutrition. Although their sodium levels went up, this didn't lead to any problems with increased blood pressure.

Low bicarbonate levels are common in patients with CKD and can lead to a wide range of other problems. "This is the first randomized controlled study of its kind," says Yaqoob. "A simple remedy like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), when used appropriately, can be very effective."

Baking soda helps moderate blood Ph. The kidneys and pancreas have to make bicarbonate, from what I’ve read, up to a half pound a day.

I do not think we make “sodium bicarbonate,” per se, but it appears to be useful, despite the added sodium.

Do they make a big deal out of the aluminum free baking soda? I’m hearing bad stuff about Al relative to vaccines and Alzheimer’s.

despite the added sodium.

Sodium is a vital nutrient for all mammals. Without it, we die.

Life is like sodium. You get too much you die crazy. Not enough and you just die.

From The Peoples’ Pharmacy site, quoting a Gastroenterology article:

“Some people selected doses of bicarbonate that would result in several hundred milliliters of gas release within 3 min; it seems likely that such injudicious ingestion of sodium bicarbonate, if taken when the stomach was distended with air, food, and liquid, could be an important factor in spontaneous gastric rupture.”

You are speaking of baking powder—not baking soda.

There are substances that can pull aluminum out of your body and brain, if you believe you have a concern.

One study I posted described 1/8 of a teaspoon, taken three times a day, with meals.

But who has “low bicarbonate” levels? That’s not going to be the majority of patients with chronic kidney disease.

Just wondered if the store stuff was adulterated. Had a baking soda freak tell me to buy the Al free stuff at the hippie store.

Actually, people with kidney disease are the very ones likely to have that problem.

Not many.

Results Out of 41,749 patients (with CKD), 13.9% (n = 5796) had low and 1.6% (n = 652) had high serum bicarbonate levels.

You can, but it would make it less acidic.

It appears CKD will lead to high acid blood, to death.

“Patients with CKD experience a multitude of abnormalities and disabilities, among which metabolic acidosis was one of the earliest complications to be recognized and explained pathologically.1–4 In typical CKD, there is a direct correlation between the decline in GFR and the reduction in serum bicarbonate thought to be due primarily to the inability of the kidney to synthesize ammonia, regenerate bicarbonate, and excrete hydrogen ions.5”

“However, the optimal range for serum bicarbonate in patients with CKD is yet to be established, because metabolic alkalosis also portends poor outcomes.20”

http://m.jasn.asnjournals.org/content/26/3/515.full

Compromised kidneys give their “lives” to keep blood Ph normal. Part of the problem is the stress that induces, which progresses the disease.

baking SODA is inherently aluminum-free since baking SODA contains nothing but SODIUM bicarbonate .... you’re thinking of double-acting backing POWDER, most of which DO contain an aluminum salt, though the more knowledgeable of us use double-acting baking POWDER that contains phosphate agents rather than aluminum ones ...
