Or you can buy ammo loaded just above 40 S&W. My gun came with 3 spring weights. I only shoot it with the heavy spring since black bears are my main threat right now.
Corbon makes a variety of loads for it, including JHP and 115 gr. low penetration Glaser Safety slugs. On the other end of the spectrum there’s 200 gr penetrator hunting rounds if you have more grizzlies than robbers around.

Im happy with my 9mm all steel Sig Sauer P226ST.
I have had defensive encounters with a home invader and a car full of gang members at an ATM in Florida. A 4o S&W would be fine for that. But, now I live in the Roosevelt National Forest in the Colorado Rockies and I have 0 human encounters and more black bear encounters in 20 years than I can remember, certainly over 10. There are mountain lions too, but I never had one attack me, unlike the bears. So I carry based on my likely threat and I don't want to see a bear with a 40 S&W on me. I swap mags, lighter, expandable loads in the city. Solids at home.
I prefer a 40.
10 seems harsh to me.
Okay if I load it soft for target.
In the field I use the 44mag double action Ruger in bear country(full pressure loads)...with pepper spray & bells.
As I understand it, there were two loads when the .41 was introduced, a full power hunting load and a reduced police load. It seems the full power load generally issued by police departments and the officers were turned off by the blast and recoil.
Col. Cooper once touted building an MP-5 chambered in 10mm. Now THAT would be a sub-gun!
I think that is a fine choice for most situations.
Wow. A firearms-related article that doesn’t include the word “chambered” in the first paragraph.
For target use I load my 44mag (Ruger, double action) to 44 special pressures and it shoots like butter.
Feels good when I go to higher pressure rounds.
I recently purchased a Ruger SR-1911 10mm pistol. I want something I can shoot heavy, fast, cast-lead bullets out of. I evaluated the Glock Model 20 but to shoot lead bullets I would need to spend an additional $200+ to replace the barrel. The Ruger is one of the nicest quality pistols out-of-the-box I have ever owned. Recoil is snappy but not punishing. I’ve shot model 1911’s for years so there was not a new manual of arms to learn. I live in the mountains of North Idaho and there are black bears, cougars, meth heads, and assorted other targets about. I used to carry a 6-shot .357 Ruger GP-100. Now I have a 9 shot 10mm that certainly reloads a lot faster. If I haven’t solved the problem in 9 rounds I should have brought the 12 bore...
Dang! That IS a real sub-gun then.
I have a 12 ga for a house gun. In bear season I keep it loaded with the first 3 rounds slugs and then 3 00-buck. In winter I switch the order.
yes Sir... 100%
Leave the buckshot for human targets. In the early 1980’s the Alaska Dept. of Fins and Fur tested buckshot vs. slugs on some brown bear skulls they had that were overflowing their HQ freezer. None of the buckshot rounds penetrated the skull and only about 1/2 the typical round nose slugs did - the others deflected off. Then they tried the then-new to the American market Brenneke slugs. They penetrated 100% of the time due to their sharp-shoulder design. After that “study” was published every LEO and fish cop in the state stoked their 870’s with Brenneke’s. So do I.
Yep, the 12 guage is our bear protection at home. I also carried one while guiding in Alaska. We had a cracker shell as the first round and then slugs after that. Only had to fire the cracker shell once.
That is what use when the bears are awake, the hard cast, sharp shoulder Brenneke KO slugs. In winter when the threats are human or mountain lions I use 3” 00 Buck.
I never have used reduced loads in my .44s. Mostly I guess because the powders I use don’t work for them. (H110/W296)
Thanks for posting this article. I have been interested in that Grand Power semiauto with the rotating barrel action, and the Ruger New Model Blackhawk with cylinders in both .40 S&W and 10 MM. Here is the Ruger site for that one-
