Wasn’t that the night that some footage or images appeared of a couple of the congresswomen with their phones on, and were getting a text message about assassination? The image of the phone was later altered - I think it was a Getty image? I’ve slept since then, so, I could have this wrong.

Not only "the gouge" but "the straight gouge" with the odd expletive added on occasion. (In enlisted circles especially)
As far as useage, I don't recall going near any group of sailors anywhere, active duty or reservist, that didn't have that phrase on the top shelf and students of any rank (but most especially the Student Pilots I worked around) were typically in earnest, almost panic-stricken search for any "gouge" available.
...which just caused a mild flashback to my brief stint as a Radio Navigation instructor during the final transition to TACAN. (Yeah, I'm that old.) All I had to do was teach those poor guys how to do all that crap and I'd go back to the barracks every night with a five-alarm headache; I hate to think of what they felt like after flying while navigating with the mighty ARN-6.

It’s funny, great writers are usually not recognized widely, if at all, until a decade or so or decades after their works. It takes time to sink in as people read and reread and judge how the work stands up as history unfolds
Angelo Codavilla and Yaacov Apelbaum are indeed great thinkers, offering valuable insight, having a keen ability for analysis and synthesis of vast information, and boiling it down to a broad yet precise perspective. These two are unquestionably gifted. They save many of us a lot of time from having to do the work ourselves. Apelbaum has a day job. I have no idea where he finds the time.
I watched that barrel roll on youtube today. He got really low near the water and barely recovered. That being said, how many trained pilots would even attempt a barrel roll in a twin turboprop passenger-hauler let alone able to complete one, pretty or not, and keep control? He claimed to just be a gamer. The audio between him and ATC was really weird. Seemed very calm. Rich showed no fear or panic at all. Very incongruous.
