I once took photos of high school football games. I did it as a way to get into the game free and also to take photos of the cheerleaders. I was called a stringer as I got paid (very little)by the inch space the photos or words took.
I was talking to a much higher paid professional and mentioned that every now and then you would catch a slip where there was too much showing. He told me he destroys the print but not the negative. I had the same thing happen with the head cheerleader who later became Miss Georgia. I did not do my own developing and picked them up at the drug store.
Now the processor Would have selected what they think is the best photo and placed it in an oval frame as the first picture. When I went to pick it up, the sales girls sort if smiled as she handed it to me.
When I looked, the girl was about half way to a high kick and there it all was. Well most of it. None of the other ones had anything like it.
I did throw it away. Not too many years later I came across the negative and scanned it on a Nikon Coolscan V. No doubr I had a photo I could sell but no, I would never do that and really did just destroy it.
I cannot imagine having much of a say in what my grandkids do.
And, yes I would let my kid play football. And if they started young, I would be happy to teach them how to tackle the proper way.
The game isnt dangerous if the kids are taught correctly.
Nope. Lots of other great sports out there.
Yes! There’s no substitute for hitting people hard and getting hit hard. It makes you tough and determined, and acquaints you with your strengths and limitations.
Rugby is a great game. If more kids played rugby, the world would be a better place. Of course they wouldnt be able to drink after the games.
Good for your boys. My oldest played hockey and my next was in an Olympic sport for 10 years. I swear they learned more and developed into better people from their athletics. My third has special needs so organized sports is out. But my little one WILL BE AN ATHLETE in her teens or bust. She is already very talented at a few things. She need to pick her fave.
Dealing daily with Alzheimers, I really do want to make the contact sports safer for the brain, without hindering the players or game rules. One day we will find a way. Im not talking injuries. All sports have risks. Im just talking about cumulative brain concussions that may be preventable, we just havent invented how yet.
I was a college sports photographer and I used to love hockey. I had the best seat in the house, with a big sharp lens.
The things I saw hockey players do on skates was like ballet, with a sledge hammer. They were amazing athletes. There are always debates about which sports have the best athletes. Hockey players are up there.
I never dreaded going to a hockey game. Nothing better than a great hockey game. Nothing worse than a bad baseball game.
I played 4 years of high school (guard on offense and defense), step-son is now playing in his 4th year of high school, guard on offense and defense.
Really funny part, my number was 62 and his freshman year he came home with number 62. Asked how he ended up with that he said he really wanted that one so he took it and he still wears it. Until then he never knew I had it too.
Bump
right now kind of regretting allowing ours to play football (10th grader).
In one easy l,ooking play he tore his ACL and ripped both miniscus. Major surgery in 2 weeks with months and months of rehab to follow...not real happy right now :(
It would have to be their choice. I sure wouldn’t recommend it,but if it’s what they really wanted,I wouldn’t hold them back.
Not only did my son play football, hes wrestling in college and going into law enforcement.
Only the last one makes me pray for his safety.
I miss the Friday night lights. Every time he got a sack was thrilling-the harder the hit the better. Hes a man. When he was my little boy I wanted to wrap him in bubble wrap and keep him safe from all harm. But my husband kept me rational. Our son was also a small and fairly awkward child with asthma and allergies. He learned how to lift weights in middle school and turned himself into a machine. He has accomplished more than I ever imagined he would.
His taller and more naturally athletic brother decided sports were a waste of time and focused on musical and intellectual pursuits. That was hard on his dad and they battled over it, but you have to let your kids pursue their own interests. He works as hard at his music (hours each day) as his brother does at athletics.
Pele !
Only pickup without pads
The game with helmets and pads is stupid
Pickup 5 on 5 etc is super fun
Tackle of course !
Your response suggests that you already have sustained CTE, the inability to think clearly. I wouldn't let my boys play football, you can bet; and they were also excellent wrestlers and ranked high in martial arts as well. Any one of them could probably kick your A$$.
Stupid teenager obssessed with girls.
I think this is a stupid discussion, but agree with your sentiment.
You are correct.
We use these sports to develop. My friends at grimerica want to see freak sports system. Maximum steroid use, unusual body size, genetic breeding of giants, total use of advanced body armor and tactical equipment. Any play enhancing drugs permitted during play. Anything goes, a small war with all the best toys.
That is the future. It is not pleasent (i dislike professional sports because they are boring, to me) but necessary.
Imagine a freak league of 25 stone weight men in carbon fibre body armour, hopped up on methamphetamine and reefer... kicking the bloody piss out of each other for an hour, fighting over a ball. Death and maiming, obviously contractually covered before permission to play.
That right there sells itself.
The technology developed and field tested will save or help millions of innocents, and enhance the probability of human survival.
The ugly game.

Paralysis.
