Sexual harassment in the sky: Hong Kong flight attendants fight back
AFP ^ | Dec 9, 2018

Immaculate-looking flight attendants who appear unruffled by the demands of a life spent in the air are part of the slick image sold by carriers -- but Hong Kong-based workers are increasingly hitting back against sexual harassment.

Female cabin crew told AFP of how they had been harassed by not only passengers but also other airline staff.

While they say carriers have made some steps in the right direction, they argue airlines still lag far behind in the #MeToo era.

Venus Fung, whose experiences drove her to join and lead the Cabin Attendants Union of Hong Kong, says airlines must teach workers on how to deal with harassment.

My son is drop dead attractive. He is 23 and the attention he gets from females is embarrassing for him, and he is no shrinking violet.

I often wished I had this attribute. I'm definitely very average looking, and now that I'm past 50, not even quite average. So I yearned to have that feature, to be incredibly physically attractive.

Then I met Joel.

Joel was literally a male model, who had appeared on the covers of such magazines as GQ and Esquire, as well as numerous fitness magazine.

I told him I envied his appearance and success with women, and he looked sad. He sat me down. He told me that I would never want this curse, if I actually had it.

I was flabbergasted. "What do you mean? You can have any woman you meet! ANY ONE OF THEM!"

He smiled sardonically, and responded, "True, and it is Hell on Earth. You see, because I can, I often do....since I am an addict. And something you don't know is that every woman you sleep with takes a small piece of you away.... and now, I have no ME left. You don't get it, you may never, but this thing you desire is actually something that kills you from the inside."

I changed in that moment. I no longer desired the curse of excessive attractiveness. I no longer wanted the curse of the ability to sleep with absolutely any woman I met.

The Apostle Paul mentioned something like this.

Turns out Christ knows the real deal.

Go figure.

(It was, however, interesting to have Gospel confirmed in the flesh!)

It has definitely been a burden. He tries to use grace.

He tries to make it all into a joke, to leave things well. Sort of “If only...” and smiles and leaves.

One wouldn’t take no, in a bar and he had to ask her to stop touching him and she hauled off and punched him in the nose, and she was removed by the management. Women don’t take no for an answer with any grace.

One woman, at a party, had a bit to drink and decided to Tarzan on him and she ended up sliding through between his legs and crashing into the furniture behind him. He is a target. And men who don’t know him are not thrilled when he shows up and the women get attentive.

I dont recall women being so forward when I was young. But when I listen to young women talk about men, it is like they are talking about meat, or objects.

Funny Women in the sixties and seventies complained about being objectified, and today they make MAD Men look good.

United Airlines is the antidote for this type of behavior. UAL prides themselves on their never ending stable of fat, ugly and overbearing flight attendants.

I agree that we’re fallen, but even in the Bible, some pretty nasty people repented and dedicated their lives to Christ. Of course you may not share my religious views, so I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.

I wouldn’t tell you if I was, but you don’t have to be a cop to see the men picking up even the nastiest of hookers, and that’s just what’s out in the open.

A high school graduate, single (widows and divorcees with no children considered), 20 years of age (girls 19 1/2 may apply for future consideration). 5'2" but no more than 5'9", weight 105 to 135 in proportion to height and have at least 20/40 vision without glasses

That age requirement would tend to exclude college educated women, and indicate they were looking for attractive working-class women. The job would result in them meeting lots of men from higher income levels who might be suitable husband candidates and allow them to "marry up".

Well of course they were looking for working class women, it is essentially a maid-waitress job.

First of all, this is not a competition on who is mistreated more often, just that it is happening at all.

According to CNN, a survey was conducted in partnership with the Hong Kong Flight Attendants Alliance (HKFAA). The survey results are based on 392 responses to 9,000 questionnaires distributed between November 2013 and January 2014 among employees of the HKFAA’s member airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, British Airways and United Airlines. Of survey respondents, 86% were female and 14% were male.

That percentage is larger than the percentage of African Americans in the US society at 12%. Should we just ignore them?

This article is an example of trying to sensationalize something by designating it to lead the reader to think it is a gender issue to sell their article. It goes both ways. And it is wrong both ways. So just because it is a smaller percentage, it still exists.

Naw, what I’m saying is any individual may repent and turn to God and I applaud that but the day will never come, nor has it ever been prophesied to be, when the hearts of ALL men turn to the good, at least not until the lamb lies down with the lion. As long as we live in the material world, under the iron clad rule of the bell curve, i.e. the two tailed normal distribution, there will be some very good some very bad and most in the middle.

If you've read any of my past posts, you'll see that I don't believe we should ignore female abuse of males, which happens a lot more than reported.

The dynamic is a lot different, due to societal attitudes where it's OK for women to abuse men and men are sissies if they report it. The problem is, it's largely men who enforce these societal attitudes.

And we all know why. We've seen the heroes who go rushing to the defense of the "damsels in distress" even after seeing they struck first, with no regard for the possibility that they could be on the receiving end of all that male heroism when it's their turn to be assaulted by women. Are men the victims of sexism, or are they the culprits for participating in it?

Women shell out billions a year fighting for their rights, while men shell out billions a year for prostitution. Look at those numbers, and tell me why women's issues get all of the attention.

Men won't even defend their sons against a school system that allows girls to assault them, and doesn't even grant them the right to protect themselves. On the contrary, when boys do protect themselves, the fathers side with the girls and the schools against their sons. I know men don't see it that way, but that's what they're doing whether they want to admit it or not.

If you don't agree, then name one lawsuit filed by men against the school system demanding equal protection for their sons. Oh, I forgot, only sissies would do this. Whose choice is that?

If men aren't aren't going to fight back against these double standards, that's their choice. I don't see that as a reason to avoid speaking out against men treating women like this.

It would be nice.

Doubt it will happen though. Certain types of men think that any woman should be flattered by their attentions. If the woman is not then she is fill in any and all derogatory names you can think of here.

I think a lot of what you are saying is based upon current societal creations. Men having egos allowing them to be targets, women being targets, children being targets, are no different than people being accosted with the violent crimes in our surroundings.

And unfortunately our education system, our justice system, and our “media” are on equal terms with the ignoring and pardoning of it.

A few years ago my wife was walking in front of me out of a ball park in San Francisco when a guy reached in front of me and pitched her behind. When the wife cried out, I placed the man in a sugar hold and chocked him out in about 10 seconds. I left him there on the ground as the crowd walked past him sometimes not seeing him and stepping on him. If I had called security, nothing would have been done as it wouldn’t have made any difference to them. They’d have gotten him walking again, and he’d have walked or spent a minimal jail sentence and got out to do it again.

But to say that the act of harassment of the attendants is a one way street isn’t exactly correct. Harassing people on the streets is no different. So the article was trying to sensationalize itself by using women as the bait. Are there problems? Yes. But the problems are not sexual, they are criminal. It needs to be treated as such in all instances. Not just with women and their gender.
