Casper Regional Landfill begins burying turbine blades

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) One wind farm in Glenrock and two from the Saratoga area have partnered with the Casper Regional Landfill to dispose of their old wind turbine blades.

More than 900 blades will be brought to the landfill beginning now until the end of next spring.

The Casper Solid Waste Manager, Cynthia Langston, said that though most turbine blades can be reused, there are some that are simply un-recyclable.

"Ninety percent of the turbines are completely reclaimed, recycled, and reused, but there is ten percent that is fiberglass, so those are coming to us from three different farms in the state."

Langston said that though the motor houses can be crushed, the blades are too strong.

There are currently three options for the disposal of the blade:landfill, incineration and recyling[4].

Landfill disposal represents the cheapest option; however most countries aim to reduce the amount of landfill waste, and in the future disposal of such a large amount of material will be unacceptable.

Turbine Blades are constructed from composite materialsW and these can be burned for calorific value [5] as a source of energy. Incineration can lead to the production of hazardous by-products and approximately 60% material remains as scrap[4] which will be disposed of in a landfill, or recycled as construction filler within a material.

Currently, there are two main methods of recycling: mechanical, which greatly reduces the scrap’s size to produce recyclates, and thermal processing[5], which breaks down the scrap material into materials and energy.

Can't beat windmills for clean energy.

Maintenance and wear on these windmills must sure put a dent in the cost-return factor.

Looks like they’d be pretty good for starting spontaneous grassland fires too.
So they’ve got that going for them.

Totally bogus statistic in my opinion. Twenty three percent might be possible when the wind is actually blowing, but is that power at that time needed? In many cases that is not the case. Wind power is nothing more than a scam. Wind power went out in the 1930’s with the wind charger. Rural electrification made it all worthless. Want to pump water out on the prairie to your stock tank. Great, use wind. Live in a windy area and want some night time DC power to go along with your solar panels. Spend the money and enjoy the benefits and know that 30% efficiency is about all you can hope for. Don’t pretend the local utility wants to pay you for the privilege of using your generated power, which they and their customers need like another hole in the head.

“I think wind energy can be “part” of a solution.....”

A solution in search of a problem?

My Honda will be 20 years old come next month.

I’m keeping it another 20 if at all possible.

You lefties can do your betalectric shenanigans all you want, but you will have to pry my dead hands from the steering wheel of my beautiful burner of brachiosaurus extravagance.

And I’m a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. player.

23% is based on overall generation for an entire year.

There are many places on earth with a minimum wind high enough for consistent energy production. Easy to calculate if it is worth it with historic weather data

Burn the windmill blades while generating electricity from the steam.

Create one coal like plant, with big fat smoke stacks and burn away windmills.

Power Company hopefully will NEVER calculate base load on potential. The first time they do you can Murphy’s law yourself right into a blackout. Wind might have an application powering water to a stock tank, but even then, if you run out of wind you are jeopardizing the herd and you are hauling water. A hundred years of electrification have lead to quite a few absolutes. If you want or need reliability, you stick to the absolutes, and never deviate. If you want black outs, brown outs, unreliability, then you revert to yesteryears methods before absolutes were established. There are sufficient outages just based on equipment and weather, why inject stupidity into the equation?

If God is running the power company then all above goes out the window, but until then...

My point is there are many places with enough recorded wind 24/7. Its not “potential’ and there is no sign of “running out” of wind for the forseeable future of mankind. There are massive quantities of guaranteed 24/7 energy that has been going right over our heads for for a very long time.

Fiberglass windmills are probably not tbe best way to capture it but the energy is there. How best to capture it needs to be studied with the same intensity as the manhattan project

When energy needing to be available is dependent on weather and climate, it isn’t base load it is potential. You are correct that windmills aren’t the appropriate solution and that is only the visible part of the non solution. The not so visible part is the giant underground concrete block that is needed to support the visible structure. Green energy is still a myth. Base load remains in the realm of Hydro, gas, coal, and nuclear.

The more you hear about green energy taking over or providing more than twenty percent of needed energy, the closer you will be to an unsustainable grid. I am not against clean energy, but leftist nuts calling what now exist as dirty, is not telling the truth, and this discussion could go on forever. We may just have to agree to disagree till the next viable scientific discovery that can truly change the way energy is produced in the amounts needed to supply the world. At the moment it appears that would be the suitcase sized nuclear energy plant. Well, maybe suitcase sized is a dream, but...
