How renters in LA and San Francisco are opting to live in communal pods [tr]

It's the latest trend in affordable housing - renters shelling out $1200 a month to live in communal pods in Los Angeles or San Francisco, where sex is banned and residents brand themselves with matching tattoos.

PodShare, founded in in 2012, provides co-ed bunkbeds in six locations across California which it rents for between $50 and $60 a night, amounting to between $1,000 and $1400 a month.

Everyone gets a bed that turns into a desk, individual power outlets, a locker, a shelf and a personal TV and tenants are known as 'pod-estrians'. The company uses the term 'co-living' for their 50-square-foot-pods.

And such is the power of the pod that some of those living there are now opting to get matching tattoos of the company's logo, giving themselves 'pod number' names like 'Podestrian #3668'.

If you are going to live like that better off joining the Navy. At least you get paid for living in a pod.

Livin’ the dream in California.

Meanwhile, I enjoy 32 acres and a nice home in KY for half the price and virtually non-existent real estate taxes.

‘Course, I don’t have a Starbucks or needle exchange nearby, but I have a Keurig in the kitchen and a box of 16 penny nails in the shed.

So I’m good...

The glorified barracks look like what low skilled migrant workers working in the Middle East live in or living quarters at Chinese factories

The Japanese have more privacy in their capsule hotels. The price is more reasonable as well. I stayed in one when I wanted to check out Kobe before accepting a job offer. It wasn’t bad at all.

$1200 a month for a small cubicle living space doesn’t leave much to clean the human crap off your shoes you risk stepping in every time you walk down an SF street.

So it’s an expensive doss house. Funny how “Progressivism” always leads back to re-living past problems and everyone should now live in essentially Victorian era slums especially with diseases that had been wiped out returning and people living in close proximity in pods will be especially susceptible.

For added realism they could make one painted haze grey and put it on gimbals and make it pitch up and down.

I charge my 19-year-old $150/month to share a bedroom with her sister. If a person wants to quit school and continue living here, she has to pay.

Two young ladies sharing a two-bedroom apartment was common when I was younger.

I rented a room from a woman who had two guys split the rent of a three-bedroom townhouse with her. She lived in the master bedroom.

"Doss house" That's the term I was trying to recall. Many thanks!

Per Merriam Webster:
Doss House: A cheap rooming house or hotel; a flophouse (American slang/derogatory term)
