Tanks for the thread!
Thank you for Thread 10!
“For most pneumonia patients, the microbe causing the infection is never identified. In the U.S. there are over three million cases of pneumonia on an annual basis. Because approximately 62% of cases of pneumonia wind up being unexplained, this would imply potentially testing close to 1.9 million people in a given year.”
***Break*** (talks about costs)
So if they tested the rest (1.9 million)
Carefully read the following.
“How many cases would turn up? Probably FEW IF ANY. In the U.K., approximately 0.4% of suspected cases - these are people who HAD BEEN to China, or BEEN IN CONTACT with others ill with the virus outside China - have turned out positive for novel Corona virus. From this it can be inferred that testing all those with unexplained pneumonia - who are not suspected cases, based on contacts, travel and medical history - would likely yield a MINISCULE NUMBER of positive cases, IF THAT.”

DON’T PANIC! TIME will tell. Let’s see where we are in 2 or 3 weeks from now (incubation period).
As always, thanks so much for these threads!!! By the way,, I discovered this series of threads around Thread 3...is there a Ping List or?
Thanks, again!
BUMP for later reading and possible commenting...
Up until now, Alabama health officials sent all samples to the CDC for testing, but staff at the Alabama Department of Public Health are working to change that.
The state health department now has testing kits, said Dr. Karen Landers, area health officer for ADPH. Landers said the state lab is conducting a quality assurance process before running tests for the new virus. She said she did not know exactly when they would be able to run the tests in Alabama.
Problems delay testing for coronavirus in Alabama, but fix coming
So, most of the country hasn't been completely flying blind, though the testing ability has been very limited to this point.
Putting the accuracy of China’s disclosed figures aside, Italy is now the second country to surpass China in “infections per capita”. SK has doubled China.
Sacramento County Health Department (California) has ordered skilled nursing facilities to start quarantining vulnerable patients to protect them from this disease.
This from a friend in Sacto who was told today she can’t visit her grandfather because of the order.
We both agree it’s a good decision!
OK so I ordered furnace filters from Amazon this am. now I’m having 2nd thoughts....I checked the tracking # and there is no location displayed as to where the shipping label was created....not sure if I want it now.....
So, theres 2 type. The milder type S and the one that is most likely to send one to the intensive care unit L type.
thanks for the thread:)
my temperature is 98.4
I’ve been to two grocery stores in Missouri in the last two days (no known cases yet reported in Mo.) The ‘Show Me’ state stores seem balanced at this point.
What I mean is there is no panic buying, but canned goods, water, disinfectant and toilet paper were definitely much lower in stock. It will be an interesting month.
Seems wise to go ahead and have some essentials for a couple months since the masses are prone to panic. Truly will be glad when this is over.
The wife is flying in from southeast Asia Saturday. She’s been in Manila, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, flying back through Tokyo & Chicago to DC.
She was at a hotel in KL that has a confirmed case, but no direct contact. Our priority is simply, get home, monitor, and stay home. Doc says can’t get any test kits unless she shows symptoms. We’ll see what they do at customs.
I’ve already told the neighbors who are awesome about it, have stocked up on meds/ cleaning materials, and just looking forward to having the girl home. We’re both in our 50s and generally healthy. I have slight asthma, but I don’t take steroids, which can degrade immune system. She gets sick all the time from traveling so much, which I generally avoid. Am planning on getting exercise without interacting with others, basically, hitting the tennis court that’s around the corner w/ my ball machine and walking the dogs.
Having lunch tomorrow with my 80+yo parents before the wife gets back, as we will not be visiting them until this thing passes. My only worry with the ‘rents is that my 83yo father insists on taking the metro downtown to the courthouse every few days for his work, which he won’t stop. Mom’s a birder, so out a lot with no risk and very healthy.
So we’ll see!
Btw, this document is actually sensible and consistent with what our doctors have told us (NPR):

Medicare now covers coronavirus testing
You may be hearing about the coronavirus (officially called 2019-novel coronavirus or COVID-19) in the news. While there isnt a vaccine yet, Medicare is still here to help. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers a test to see if you have coronavirus. This test is covered when your doctor or other health care provider orders it, if you got the test on or after February 4, 2020.
You usually pay nothing for Medicare-covered clinical diagnostic laboratory tests. Note: Your provider will need to wait until after April 1, 2020 to be able to submit a claim to Medicare for this test.
To prevent the spread of this illness or other illnesses including the flu, here are some tips to follow:
Wash your hands often with soap and water
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
Stay home when youre sick
See your doctor if you think youre ill
For more information on the coronavirus, please visit the Centers for Disease Control website.
It is not yet known to what extent it could mutate. Viruses surprise us all the time, says Professor Tracey Goldstein, the co-principal lead on pathogen detection for Predict at UC Davis.
She points to extrapolated figures that suggest there may be a staggering 3,200 different types of coronavirus harboured in bats alone. Keeping your eyes on understanding what might be coming up ahead and testing and learning from these viruses once we have found them is critically important.
Where once virus hunters took to pristine rain forests to locate disease, this is changing as human populations expand. Africas population is expected to double by 2050, exceeding more than 2 billion people. As people encroach ever further into the environment, the potential to encounter new viruses for which we have no natural immunity is huge.

...............
Problem is if we are going to let every new virus that comes along change our lives simply because we are still buying the DBM/ BS we are in for a long siege of one virus after another.
There are thousands of virus in Africa alone that can be transferred from animals to humans. Many are like the common flu.If we react to each and every new virus like we are to corona 19 we will be falling right into the driveby trap.
What does it do? It's harder to detect up to 30 days. But other than that it's very similar to the common flu with almost the same death toll percentages 2-3%. So why all the fuss I don't get it!!
If this thing does not respond well to hot weather it will so similar to the flu we will finally realize we have been duped.

Chinese scientists identify two types of the coronavirus with faster spread of the more aggressive kind
Sam Meredith

The more aggressive type of virus was found to be prevalent in the early stages of the outbreak in Wuhan the Chinese city where COVID-19 was first detected late last year.
But, the frequency of this type of virus has since decreased from early January, the scientists said.
Researchers cautioned that data examined in the study was still “very limited.”
