You’ve just described my grandparents.

When we did household wrap up when my grandfather passed, the attic was a sight to behold.

Every old appliance that had ever ‘quit’ (not the bigger stuff, that was in an out building) was up there. Stand mixers from the 60s, old lamps, etc.

Ended up selling some of that stuff for a pretty penny actually. Apparently some people restore that kind of stuff and sell it to those interested in ‘antique’ items that have ‘newer’ innards.

Yeah, no kidding. There aren’t that many people near us and the only restaurants are the sonic and the mcd’s. And those are a 15-20m ride anyways.

The Great Depression involved a decade and people actually starving.

And to me a different mindset in a number of ways wouldn’t be a bad thing.

"2018 flu stats.............47 million cases......647,000 hospitalized.....67,000 died!!!"

Wow that is high but no source. You are not far off, you must have gotten the data from a non CDC page.

2018 to 2019 35 million cases 490561 hospitalizations 34157 deaths
2017 to 2018 44 million cases 808129 hospitalizations 61099 deaths

Source: CDC Influenza Page

From USA Today: "The flu, a chronic killer that the nation has come to expect in yearly cycles – and the reason millions of Americans get flu shots – killed an estimated 508 people per day in the U.S. during the 2017-18 flu season, the nation's worst in the last decade, according to the CDC. This year's flu season has recorded an average of 383 deaths per day, CDC figures show."

The Coronavirus is just getting started. There was 1049 deaths yesterday. That is double the worst daily death toll of the Flu recorded in the USA.

More than 1,000 in US die in a single day from coronavirus, doubling the worst daily death toll of the flu

Did Coronovirus kill more people yesterday then Flu every kill in one day?

“people who lived through that period were still hoarding bent nails and old toys for the rest of their lives.”

My mom and her seven siblings grew up on a farm during the depression. All of them went on to have nice, average lives. My mom still tears napkins in half so they last twice as long.

My aunt took care of an older man who had invented something for one of the Fortune 100 companies and was very wealthy. When he died, she inherited millions. Until she died, she still would wash and dry all of her Zip-Loc bags to re-use.

SWITZERLAND

Switzerland is one of the countries most affected by the coronavirus, with more than 18,000 positive tests and over 490 deaths.

Here’s the latest:
As of April 2 (3pm), 18,072 people have tested positive and 497 people have died, according to an aggregate of cantonal statisticsexternal link.

On April 2, the Swiss head of infectious diseases Daniel Koch indicated that the peak of the outbreak had not been reached but that the upward progression was not as steep as in previous days. “It is still too early to make a reliable forecast of how things will look in the coming weeks,” said Koch, adding that it was “certainly too early” to relax measures.”

In my prior life as a telco engineer, the battery strings providing -48 VDC at a steady draw of 20,000 amps in the central office were standard arrangements. The AC mains drive rectifier bays to charge the batteries. Outside, an emergency generator running on diesel (30 days fuel onsite) or natural gas (co-gen plant could switch between gas turbines on natural gas or diesel generator backup). The landline phones were powered from the central office. Much of that model is deprecated in favor of wireless technologies today. Many more customers power their own CPE (customer premises equipment) from AC mains. Few have the foresight to have a UPS for phones/routers.

My local city has diesel backup good for a week for city government. The 5 city water pumps are electric. The pump sites appear to have an onsite diesel backup. Ditto for the water pressure boost pumps.

Loss of grid would be a game changer. Hard to get fuel. Refrigeration down in businesses with rapid spoilage of food in the stores. That happened in San Diego with the rolling blackouts. Hospitals have some backup, but no location has infinite ability to run.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but if you have double ply toilet tissue save the cores then you can separate the plys and get twice the double ply length.

I’ve also read some people were hanging up their paper towels, if not completely disintegrated, for reuse.

Have some more, but not quite sure were there yet.

Drastic times call for drastic measures.

“wash and dry all of her Zip-Loc bags to re-use.”

Of course, they last forever.

(or until the seal breaks, still a long time)

Curious if anyone here has quit their job yet?

My wife and I are both classified as essential workers. I work for a food distribution company that services supermarkets and independent grocers. She is a school teacher working in admin. They are still working.

We are constantly hearing from may sources that EVERYBODY should “STAY AT HOME” without any qualifications mentioned. Sometimes it’s mentioned three times in a row for emphasis.

Really has my wife wigged out to the point where she is wanting us to either quit work or try to take a leave of absence. Any suggestions?

Approved for a certain kind of use. NYC or NY is supposed to be doing a trial but Cuomo outlawed it otherwise as did Michigan governor. Have no idea about FL but was disappointed to hear a few days for test results and they sent them both home, hopefully with instructions to stay away from other people. Let people deliver what you need etc etc. FL is kind of behind the ball on this. My rural State of MO issued stay-at-home order before FL. DeSantis must have been waiting for permission from the tourism board or something.

I can believe there’s a shortage right now for something that’s usually reserved for rheumatoid arthritis and malaria. I imagine and might have read about doctors buying it up for themselves and family. We need US manufacturing capabilities and a national strategic stockpile of a whole lot of things.

“people who lived through that period were still hoarding bent nails”

LOL. My grandfather did just that, and I’m debating it.

My grandmother had said “John never threw out a bent nail, he always figured that he could straighten it, if needed.”

Part of my long-term thinking at this point is to avoid throwing out as much as possible, because I don’t know what will become hard to replace. Example: I had a relatively old shop vac and bought a new one (made in China, of course). Old shop vac, which still works, got sent to the attic, and is now a spare.

My wife is a police/fire/EMS dispatcher and the system admin for the law enforcement software used by the department. The only certified admin. Essential. My customer provides an essential service for the government. That is job security for me...until April 17th when the contract runs out of money. I'm looking for the next gig. Hopefully, more software development, 100% telecommuting from my home office.
