FAKE HISTORY: USA Today Pretends Democrats Didn’t Found the KKK, Start Civil War (They Did)

Apparently, if you don’t like certain facts, you can just declare them false. That seems to be the thinking behind a USA Today “fact check” pretending that Democrats didn’t start the Civil War and found the KKK. But, they did. In a June 30 assertion USA Today rated “false,” the paper began, “Claim: The Democratic Party started the Civil War to preserve slavery and later the KKK.”

The entire article essentially conceded that the Confederacy was run by Democrats, made up by Democrats, as was the KKK. But don’t blame the Democratic Party for that! USA Today writer Devon Link calls the claim “an oversimplified trope about the Democratic Party.”

The article is made up of “yes, but…” concessions. Link squirmed, “Historians agree that although factions of the Democratic Party did majorly contribute to the Civil War's start and KKK's founding, it is inaccurate to say the party is responsible for either.”

Note the argument veers toward a defense of the confederacy as they dance around the old “Civil War wasn’t about slavery” proposition.

Yeah, we enslaved blacks and fought to the death to keep our slaves, but.... it wasn’t really exactly officially “us” we were just the ones doing it.

Slavery, Jim Crow, KKK, segregation, etc. were what established a big portion of the Democrat Party’s base of power. To suggest otherwise is fake history.

It's an oversimplification to say Democrats supported slavery and the KKK. They were actually against them, but... but the Republicans needed a scapegoat.

Because Lincoln was a slave trader, ya see, and he... he scalped Indians for a living. Yeah.

Unreal. Embarrassingly stupid.

So USAToday is saying the South didn't start the Civil War to preserve slavery? That's how I read it, USAToday...

All the people they have a problem with are Democrats. The KKK were ALL democrats. Republicans were the enemy. Republicans were making sure that slaves were given a wage, and were free. Not sure it worked too well. But democrats were the south. Republicans started as an anti-slavery party. And it has been won ever since. It was the republicans that got the equal rights bill passed in the 60s. The democrats could not get 50% of their party.

The other thing that’s really funny is that Andrew Jackson, whom they hate- and he was an awful person, pro-slavery, a cruel slave owner himself, drove the Indians out everywhere and did so with great violence, tried to drive the Spanish out of Florida but not through a fair fight, hated Catholics and foreigners - was the founder of the Democratic Party.

Wonder how they’re going to explain that? But actually, Dems never have to explain anything.

The KKK and other repressive forces were designed to get the Democrats back in control in the South. The voting bloc of Republican whites with the newly freed slaves who almost unanimously voted Republican actually elected a lot of Republican governments in the former Confederate states. This had to be stopped - they took these measures to oppress blacks to get the Republican governments out of power permanently. This is not disputable...yet they claim the Democrat party wasn’t responsible. Unreal.

The Democrats need to accept their history of embracing slavery — and rejecting equality for ALL Americans.

A good start would be if the Democrat party accepts its guilt and agrees to make “reparation” payments to any American who suffered as a result of their racism (KKK, Jim Crow, etc.).

I wonder...

Should just the “white” Democrats be forced to pay?

Just wondering...

Here's an excellent summary on the so-called "switch" - which never occurred:

So USAToday is saying the South didn't start the Civil War to preserve slavery? That's how I read it, USAToday...

What they're saying is that there were two factions of the Democrat party. One faction was willing to rebel to protect slavery, but what was left unsaid is that neither faction had any problems with the institution of slavery. So at that the entire party could be considered pro-slavery, which doesn't help in this day and age.
