Had a friend who put on fireworks shows for a local baseball team. Always wore a shirt covered with burn holes. Called it his ‘lucky shirt’. Yeah, boy.

Best New Year fireworks is in the Philippines HANDS DOWN.

I was there for 2 New Year’s celebrations and their fireworks are akin to using gunpowder. I saw many times these old timers lighting up firecrackers the size of pizza boxes and throwing them 10 feet which is insane. There was so much powder blown up before midnight you cant see 10 feet in front of you.

Hahahahaha...I lived in Subic Bay for several years, but never ventured off base to find out how the Filipinos did it...

You Air Force or USN?

When I was on the USS JFK, we spent one New Years in Naples, and they wouldn’t let anyone go ashore on liberty.

They said that the city had a reputation for that particular night, where it was unsafe to be anywhere in the city.

Apparently, there was some custom about throwing things out of a window to usher in the New Year. They said the Neapolitans took it to a different level and would everything and anything out of upper story windows, and you could get killed. Seriously. Anyway, that is what they told us and I don’t know if that is true, but I can say this: I sat on the flight deck watching Naples from anchorage that night, and it looked like what I thought Beirut must have looked like.

Nah. My brother is married to a nice Filipina lady so we head there from time to time. I was at Subic 5 years ago, it’s a tourist trap and a nice community to retire in.

Good thing you asked because I’m 3rd gen Sicilian lol. We visit our ancestral home every 4 years. Yeah, they do this every year. The reason (or belief) is you throw old clothes or anything that reflects the old year, and you leave open the windows to allow the good spirits IN. Same thing in the Philippines: you leave windows OPEN before new Year and in addition, one puts coins or money around the corners of the house so good luck comes in and STICKS around.

It was a great place to be a 12 year old kid. Saw a lot of things and did a lot of things...:)

Found a spent case on my garage roof today. Not sure if it completely inert. I might put it in the firepit.

Thank you-I was glad to hear that. I have searched on the Internet to find out if that was a thing, but...never really found much on it.

All these years, I always had a nagging suspicion someone was putting us on!

Oh, God no!!!!!!!!

I was a damned picky eater and was too young to have begun drinking, because...that is the only instance I could ever see myself eating one of those things!

With enough alcohol, nearly anything is possible. I still drink occasionally, but I don’t drink much anymore...:) Don’t have the energy for it!

My in-laws only told us AFTER we ate it (cruel joke on us). I was mad at first, but chugged it down with San Mig. The “water” is actually damn good. The trick is NOT to look at it haha
