Police statement throws a different light on it, but I think there is video, so we'll see who is lying here.
Not CFP, but NewsNation, a national TV cable channel.
Interesting post there. So now we’ve got the reporter’s boss saying the reporter did nothing wrong, and the sheriff saying he did lots of things wrong.
I dunno. It would seem like putting the guy on the floor, handcuffing him, and then jailing him is an overreaction, regardless of who is right. Could it have been handled a different, less extreme way?
The Ohio governor seems to be siding with the reporter, at least as of now. As you noted, things will clear up as more video is released.
I watched Chris Cuomo last night because on Wednesday nights he has Bill O’Reilly on - maybe other nights also but I’m only aware of Wednesday. Since the reporter was from News Nation, he covered this but he didn’t seem aware that the Governor had issued any statement. He said they would keep on it and update anything that came up. Needless to say both he and O’Reilly were disgusted at what took place. Who wouldn’t be?
That reporter was one big guy and the it took several cops to take him to the floor..He wasn’t aggressive with them and tried to reason with them but they weren’t having it.
Need more than a minor reprimand for taking away someones freedom and throwing them in jail. Suspended with no pay would work
It’s a VERY RED part of the state.
Normal adults don’t need anyone to “keep the peace.”
The police aren’t there to enforce compliance with the law, but to enforce adjudication of the law. Their job is to apprehend and protect an accused criminal so he can be tried by a jury instead of hunted down by an armed posse.
You make a fair point. My argument is more based on officer discretion. Not every law has to be rigorously and sternly enforced. Think about simply keeping the peace, too.
Here’s a rather minor example. I recently watched a body-cam video of a cop approaching a guy who was sitting on a park bench. The guy was burning a memorial candle, as he had just lost a friend in the area. He wasn’t bothering anybody. He was being peaceful.
What did the cop do? He decided to enforce some law, and harass the sh*t out of the poor guy. Let’s see some ID! You are burning an open container in public without a permit!
I wish this was just an isolated, one-in-a-million incident. But it’s not. That guy will probably be anti-cop for years to come. And I can’t blame him.
“I dunno. It would seem like putting the guy on the floor, handcuffing him, and then jailing him is an overreaction, regardless of who is right. Could it have been handled a different, less extreme way?”
No other way. You will IMMEDIATELY submit to and obey your superior masters or pay for your delay, no exceptions, no compromise, and maybe even with your life.
Small price to pay for an illusion of safety...
This is why I always distinguish between "enforcing the law" as a matter of conduct and "enforcing the law" from a process standpoint.
I live in a town that has no police officers. It's awesome. The state police only come around if someone calls them and reports a crime. That's the way it's supposed to be.
Was it a female officer who took him down?
