That’s the last thing re: the fire she texted me, the winds were 60-80 MPH, knocked trees onto power lines, started 3 fires that turned into infernos because of wind.

The effing power companies should de-energize the lines in high winds like that! Or better yet, bury them. Fires around my area often start because of trees or branches falling on the power lines. Usually put out in time.

About 10 (/) years ago, a fire started about 1/2 mile from here, dry grass, plenty of grass, trees etc between my house and fire, was summer so everything was dried out. Winds were a steady 40 MPH, very winy, from the south. I saw ashes out the window, called friends, in minutes got the evacuation order. Wind driven fires can travel faster than one can imagine.

Heroic action by 3 counties’ fire engines plus helicopters stopped the fire about 1/8 mile from my neighborhood. I could not go back to my house until 10PM, about 14 hours after it started.

Naui had 3 fires, and very high winds, and a lot more people, plus some hills, fire always runs uphill fast and very hard to stop, gives people hardly any warning.

The Chico/Paradise fire in Northern CA a few years, also started by power lines.

A lot of the banyan branches a black and burned looking, they may have to be cut. Hopefully the roots and trunk and some branches are okay. Hopefully sprinkler systems were installed at some point. I don’t think would have helped in these fires, though. Yeah, I used to swim at the beach there occasionally, always smelled like the sugar factory.

What is the significance of revoking this EO? Seems as though then former fed employees would have free rein?

re carrying a screaming child from a public place.

Nope. They knew better than to try that because that kind of behavior had been dealt with at home.
I’ll never forget going out to eat with a mother of three little ones - age 3, 2, and 1. The baby started acting up. All she did was whisper in his ear and he calmed down immediately.
It’s a shame that people don’t know how to discipline children any more.

It’s an old rule of mine. I always tell folks who live in or near wooded or range grassy areas to always have a ladder handy that is long enough to get on your roof. Then have a garden hose handy that can reach the whole roof. Then have a sprinkler handy that can really blow water. Protecting the roof, no matter what it’s made of, even metal, and any wooden outside decks is the greatest step anyone can take to protect from outside fires.

Most folks can’t work up the nerve to build in an outside sprinkler so the hose is next best.

Some years ago we had a forest fire on the edge of town and the wind was blowing embers right at us. First, I bolted a sprinkler on my own roof then noticed a couple of neighbors were gone. So I used their own hoses and sprinklers to keep their roofs wet. Took a few minutes to explain what happened to their stuff when they got home. But no damage. The next development over got wiped out. Not a sprinkler in the ‘hood.

On Maui, I wonder if the sugar bizness shutting down has led to a bunch of un-kempt over growth? In the older days burning the cane fields helped keep the place cleaned up. On Oahu I remember Waialua, Aiea, and Ewa beach turned into krap piles after they quit growing cane. But they cleaned up most of that by building krap houses where the cane had been?

You are right, of course, but in Chris Christie’s case the Meme was just too timely.

Interesting observations. With a 60-80 MPH wind driven fire, few measures will do any good. DH was a firefighter for around 10 years, he knows how to make our property as fire safe as possible, and if there is a wildfire (we live very close to very ill-managed BLM vast forestland), he knows how to fight it here. We have two huge tanks, about 4000 gallons total, filled with water.

But a lot of people are stupid...

I’ve been doing a little thinking about all of these “TRUST Sessions”, “TRUST Barr” Q posts, etc.

It always seems that ‘trust’ is capitalized, as in being an acronym for something else.

Do all Q posts in this regard have ‘trust’ capitalized? If so, it seems like it could be an unknown or uncommon acronym.

Thoughts?
