Sez Uncle Tony: "When we heard that the new for 2025 Ram Ramcharger EV was going to be equipped with a gasoline powered generator to be used as a "range extender", it seemed like a practical and novel answer to the issue of range anxiety. " The reality is they've created an over stuffed, over complicated, oversized Frankenstein that has no accurate classification within the current world of vehicles. It's not an EV, It's not a Hybrid and it's not anything that could ever be considered sustainable."

Includes a 3.6 liter V6 to power on-board electric generator. The engine has no mechanical coupling to the drive train.
Nothing to go wrong here.

So what’s the price gonna be on this junk?
$80,000?
$100,000 for the top of the line?

2025 Ram Ramcharger EV Sounds like something Dodge would roll out at the Boots & Saddle in NYC’s Greenwich Village on Gay Pride Day.

On another thread about this vehicle, somebody called it a “locomotive.” That’s a good description...except locomotives don’t carry huge battery plants.
But the “loco” part certainly fits.

The Prius actually works like that, so it can be done.
But I wouldn’t trust Chrysler with that level of complexity. Especially a brand new model.

I believe the Prius connects the engine to the wheels.
This truck does not. It’s more like a diesel electric locomotive.

Sorry Uncle Tony, but the concept of an electric truck with an onboard ICE generator range extender isn't exclusive to Ram.
Edison Motors had a great build series on YouTube documenting the construction their electric logging semi that also has a built-in Caterpillar diesel generator as a range extender. All the generator does is charge the batteries when required.
The Edison Motors electric semi has a unique and I think clever use case, in that the truck is designed to go up a mountain empty using battery power, then come back down the mountain loaded and using regen to charge the batteries. Range can be extended by the onboard Cat diesel generator.

Not a bad idea if it were a ship. The Navy used tenders with diesel generators to power electric propulsion for the propellors. It has its advantages. Electric motors get 100% of torque at 0 rpm.

Why do they need a generator that large?

Despite his dismay, this may not be such a far-fetched idea. Electric motors may produce more power and torque to drive the vehicle then a gas engine. They should rightfully call us a hybrid, but they are probably trying to squeeze it in under the category of an electric vehicle, because of states like California.
