....while I have two cats I love, they never cam replace my dog SASSY(looked like BENGIE)!

....I must admit they are easier to care for ,but, their love is conditional and sparadic!

If the purpose of our time on this earth is to draw closer to God, to become more like him, perhaps our friends learn sooner then we do. It maybe that God desires their faithful campanionship as much as we do.

Thank you all for your very kind thoughts and words!

The vet we took her to,(Banfield Hospital)has a very family friendly euthanization policy. They you to be there for as much as you want. We all sat on the floor and I held her in my lap. We prayed for heaven to accept her while the Doc administered the injection and the Doc actually sat next to me and cried a bit too.

As we were leaving they gave us a sympathy card signed by the doc and nurse with a footprint and a small shock of fur.
In the card, it stated that the hospital makes a memorial donation to PetsMart's animal rescue organization in your dog's name.

Before we left for the vet, I trimmed off a some fur and brushed her good beforehand. I now have a small pile of fur and we plan to release bits of it at our/her favorite campgrounds and hiking spots this summer.

Ok, I guess it makes it better by talking about it too.

Thanks for listening.
Dave

Your dog was lucky to have you. As are the pups to come.

An old man has loved many good dogs.

Dogs Rule! Labs Rule!

No argument here!
Obligatory fair representation of labs of all colors!

I did ... was the only Lab I had bad luck with. Her name was Hershey. Came from a my vet's litter of Labs. He would check in about her every few weeks and I used to tease him about the dog needing a brain transplant. My 3 boys were little at the time and we could not break her of the habit nipping at the boy's heels when they rode their bikes. The vet was over my place giving Hershey an immunization, when he saw her nipping the boys. He threw her in his truck and took her way saying, "No dog of mine is ever going to do that." He ended up giving her to an elderly couple with no grandkids who kept her chained when not on a leash. Some are like that. She also never had that characteristic "cock" to the head when you talked to her. Very unusual for the breed.

I think chocolates have the problem of small gene pool and the priority of color over content in their breeding. [ducking to avoid the possible shots to be fired by chocolate lovers]

My black lab pictured above, though is also a pure product of show breeders. He is [was, he is 13 years older and quite bent now] quite beautiful, but one of the lousiest retrievers you ever saw. He has been a good friend though. What he lacks in complex thought he more than makes up for in complete and utter honesty.

If you look at the Cocker mix on my profile page, pictured with my Labrador, you will see the Ying for his Yang. She is also old now, and she was the hunter of the two. Every bird ever found was her doing, and he was there only to pack it back for her if we got it. Together, they made one pretty good dog!

Sounds like you had a wonderful vet, who understood the broken hearts that are left behind when a beloved pet dies...also very nice of your vet to make donations to help other dogs....

Luckily for me, my last three dogs all died at home, I did not have to take them in to be put down....but wherever the dog departs from, its always so wonderful to have the family hold the dog while it dies, and lets the dog know how much they are loved...oh, my, the tears a flowing....
