A yet-to-be-approved impotence drug developed by Eli Lilly and Co. and Icos Corp. appears to be longer-lasting than Viagra, the companies, citing a study to be released at a medical conference on Monday. Patients in the study reported success in achieving erections from 24 hours to as long as 36 hours after taking a 20 milligram pill of Cialis, said Indianapolis-based Lilly and Bothell, Wash.-based Icos on Saturday.
The study did not compare Cialis' effects directly with those of Viagra, the $1.2 billion-a-year drug for erectile dysfunction Pfizer Inc. introduced in 1998.
"There are other studies that have looked at the length of the duration of Viagra's effects, and usually it's in the eight-to-12 hour range maximum," Dr. Raymond Rosen, the author of the Cialis study, said in a phone interview.
Results of the peer-reviewed, final-phase study will be released on Monday at the American Urological Association conference in Orlando, Fla.
The study, funded by Lilly and Icos, involved 348 men with mild to severe erectile dysfunction who were given either a placebo or Cialis over eight weeks.
Patients were asked to attempt intercourse with their partners on two occasions 24 hours after taking a dose, and on two occasions after 36 hours.
About 59 percent of the patients reported positive effects in their ability to have sex after 36 hours.
Cialis (pronounced see-ALL-iss) "showed a consistent effect at both time points," said Rosen, a human sexuality researcher at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and a psychologist. "Also, in this study, the duration of effectiveness did not appear to influence the incidence or severity or side effects."
The most commonly reported side effects include headaches and upset stomachs, with less than 2 percent of patients dropping out of the study because of side effects.
Dr. Gerald Brock, an associate professor of urology at the University of West Ontario, said the findings that Cialis' effects are longer-lasting than Viagra's are significant because many patients report that the window during which Viagra is effective hinders their sex life.
"With Cialis, the vast majority of the men, even at 36 hours, are still going to have sexual function," said Brock, who was not involved in the Cialis study. "I think that dramatically results in an improvement in spontaneity for couples to have sex on their own time schedule."
Rosen attributes Cialis' longer-term effects to a difference in the rate at which it is chemically active in the bloodstream and eliminated from the body compared with Viagra.
The drugs work in a similar fashion by targeting the same enzyme that can increase blood flow to the penis. But they have different molecular structures, Rosen said.
Lilly and Icos developed Cialis in a joint venture. The companies had hoped to win marketing approval this year. But that has been pushed back to next year after the Food and Drug Administration last month said it would require additional studies before deciding on approval.
The companies have said they expect Cialis' label will warn against use by some patients with heart problems.
Pfizer officials could not be reached for comment Saturday on the Cialis findings.
However, Pfizer spokesman Geoff Cook said in March that the company expects the emergence of competing erectile dysfunction drugs will only boost its fortunes.
"We strongly believe the competition is going to grow the market," Cook said. "This condition still has a stigma attached to it.
Bayer Corp. also is awaiting FDA approval for another impotence treatment, vardenafil.

Who wants to walk around with a 36 hour erection?
BTW, I wonder if lawyers will have the same problem with this drug as they had with Viagra? Lawyers can't take viagra, it makes them taller.

There is a condition called "priapism" that can be a serious medical problem. This new drug sounds like chemically-induced priapism to me.

Isn't there enough pornography in America now to sate the biggest pervert? So now they have to invent a drug to keep a sleaze going for 36 hours? Me thinks this is why we are being visited with so much calamity.

Man, after 36 hours youd be left with something resembling a deflated bicyle innertube.

I think the drug activity time horizon is the time within which response to stimulation occurs. In other words, over the active time of the drug, things can go up and down. No drug--only down. Bad drug--all up--that would be a medical emergency. I don't think all up that is what they are claiming, or what anyone would want.

Better warn that brothel in Australia that had to close recently because of 'not being able to provide serivce..' they could go under for weeks at a time now..
To: Bubba_Leroy
People have got to understand, Vaigra does not give you an erection. I gives you the ABILITY to have an erection. It takes all the normal stimulation (foreplay, for example) to work.
What I read here is that this new drug continues to allow erections. You arn't "walking around with and erection for 36 hours". And yes, before somebody asks with a snicker, I do take Viagra.

Ever seen priapism treated? You will cringe. I work in an ER. The doctor sticks a needle in the side of the penis and drains out all the stagnant blood. Then he runs in a drug that constricts the blood vessels and BINGO- soft and flabby. I have no idea if the patient can ever have an erection again.

Who wants to walk around with a 36 hour erection? I would say that it depends on the quality and quantity of the available women in the 36 hours.
To: Bubba_Leroy
One of the side effects of Viagra, as its advertisement states is "That if you have an erection that lasts 4 hours or more call your doctor."
I pointed the line out to my wife, who said judging by your grin, you would call ABC, CBS and NBC before you called the doctor.

You did notice, didn't you, that the article doesn't say the drug gave 24-36 hour erections? It said that men could achieve an erection at points along that period of time.

An alpha agonist. It depends on whether the priapism was venous or arterial in origin and how long the condition was suffered before treatment. Previous methods of treatment included ice packs, cold water enemas, and/or massage of the prostate.
It's telling about the state of reading in the U.S. these days that so many people thought this article was talking about 24-36 hour erections.

When I clicked on this thread, a pop-up ad (no pun intended) appeared for penis enlargement pills. I have never had that happen at FR before.
I can't understand what triggered that, but did this happen to anyone else?

ex-con was saying that the inability to maintain an erection and the use of a drug to treat that inability constituted a medical condition.

It's telling about the state of humor in the U.S. these days that so many people can't tell when someone is joking.
BTW, I was joking about the part about lawyers taking Viagra too. It doesn't really make them taller. It just makes them stand really straight.

When are they going to introduce the drug that turns your date into a pizza and a twelve pack when you're finished?
To: GeorgeHL
No I'm just stating I think the medical community should devote more of its time and money seeking the cure of diseases and stop pandering to the perverts . Penny-wise and pound-foolish. Your silly characterizations of Viagra users aside, where exactly do you think that drug companies get the money they spend on research? Every time one of those millions of "perverts" picks up their prescription, they are helping to pay for the research and development of treatments and cures for diseases that even you would consider serious.
Get a little perspective - those "perverts" might just save your life someday.

Beats the daylights out of "Love Potion #9". That guy just kissed everything in sight. Will this new drug cause someone to...well, nevermind.
Hello Mr. and Mrs. America. You can't smoke a doobie yet we at Eli Lilly and Co. and Icos Corp. have developed something sure to give you something else to do with your time while your kids are spaced out on Ritalin and other legal psychotropic (acting on the mind) drugs!
And don't worry if the kiddos get ahold of it behind your back. There are even drugs currently available to help with the unwanted side effects of our new drug from our friends and fellow pharmaceutical dispensers at Danco Laboratories.
Have a "stand up" day!

All seriousness aside....Back last January I discovered, quite by accident, something that works better than any of these pills although it is expensive. If they inject about six units of blood, drawn from females, into you the results are far superior to these pills. As soon as that female blood gets in your veins, it all heads for one place and stays there. For a week or so you are sixteen years old again. Like I said it is expensive but, you not old have the fun of having to hold a book in front of you while you walk across the room but you automatically put the toilet seat down.
