OORAH!!

Oorah (ooh-ra’) adj., U.S. Marine Corps/U.S. Navy Seabee slang. Referring to or meaning anything except "no". Generally used when at a loss for words. Also:

Yes.

Good or great.

Glad to meet you; Welcome aboard.

Thank you.

That is really neat, I want one too.

I don’t know, but will check on it.

I haven’t the vaguest idea what you are blabbering about.

Sorry, I wasn't listening.

You have taken the correct action; You have made the right decision.

You have got to be shitting me; Bullshit.

I don’t know what that means, but I’m too embarrassed to ask for clarification.

Stop sniveling.

That is enough of your drivel – sit down.

Good copy, solid copy, roger, message received, understood.

Go to the next (briefing) slide.

I am a motivated, hard core Marine/Seabee warrior!

I’m really not motivated or hard core, but want to sound like I am.

Amen!

Not a term used in the USMC during my 'sentence' of 1966-68. We mostly would just say "Eat the apple"...and wait for anybody within earshot to complete the sentence: "and F*%& the Corps!"

It was a term in '72, but my Dad never heard it and he retired in '70.

I thought it originated as a middle-eastern (Turkish?) war cry, meaning (roughly) "KILL!!! KILL!!!"

Years ago, in Basic Training, one of my drill sergeants told us that the word was actually HUA, and was an abbreviation for heard, understood, acknowledged. Since then, I know of nonbody else who has ever heard this claim. Anyone here?

Montel Williams says this all the time on his show whenever there are military men in his audience. Sometimes I will say it when feeling particularly sorry for myself. It's good for motivating oneself out of inaction and laziness.

It's quite a coincidence that you should happen to dig this thread up from the nether regions of FR. I happened to be watching Black Hawk Down last night, and noticed that all the Rangers say "hooah."

Perhaps this is denotes some kind of interservice rivalry twixt the Rangers and Marines.

I found it while exploring the other forums of FR. It seems that everyone has their particular version. The military can't be beat for motivation and inspiration IMHO.

Thanks for clearing this up. Now that I see the word in print and your explanation, I know I was wrong, in thinking they were paying tribute to Oprah.
