My Outlook Email Has Been Frozen by an Incoming Piece of Mail!!HELP!!
12.09.02 | mlmr

I received some email last night into Outlook. When I went to delete it and highlighted it to delete it (it was the first of the group) it opened two windows, the first asking for a download and the second asking me to choose what geographic area to come from. Interestingly there is no choie on the geographic area. I have to sign off the computer to get out of the program lock. I have rebooted Outlook 5 times and it always goes to the above described scene. I imagine this is a virus. What to do?? I have the free version of Zone Alarm on my computer. Help!

Downlood Outlook 6 and Internet Explorer 6 from Microsoft (it's free) and install it. (Back up valuable data files first, as with any major install operation.)

Next, there is a setting that you can change, I believe in "Security", to force HTML e-mails to display as "Text Only". HTML e-mails may contain executable code, this setting prevents the code from executing.

Also recommended is the setting to prevent potentially risky file attachments (.exe, .com., .bat., .doc etc. files) being transferred from Outlook to any directory on your computer. When you receive a file attachment that you expect from a known correspondent, turn off this setting so that you can save the file attachment.

Good luck!

At work, we keep getting the snow white and seven dwarfs email..hahahhahhaah. You would think that the network admin could fitler it out already. Most of us get it at least once a week for over a year now!

Any idea what it would do? I'm almost tempted to........

Don't launch outlook. find where it is storing your mail and see if you can delete the offending message without invoking the client. I used to be able to do that with outlook but have not used it in a few years. If your not technical in the slightest though I would recommend against it, but if your adventurous and have nothing to lose it always fun to poke around and learn :)

Just curious, are using the full Outlook or Outlook Express?

POP mail or an Exchange Server (Corporate Workgroup)

We've installed the security patch from MS on our full Outlook and it prevents the behavior you describe.

Registered, I'm interested in your patch also?

How do I do this? Do I call my ISP and have them set it up? I use Road Runner.

I'm sorry, I asked what version of Windoes, not Outlook. Anyway, can you open Outlook without highlighting te offending email? If so, browse the Tools menu for a Macros option and turn off macro processing, or set security to the highest possible level.

If this can't be none you may need to runinstall or disable scripting on your computer. This varies from version to version of Windows, but can usually be found in Control Panel, Add/remove Programs, Windos Components.

If you can access it through Outlook Web Access, delete it from there.

My favorite bit of Outlook humor is when someway commented a year or so ago, during the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak in the UK.

They said that F&M disease couldn't possible be a real virus, because Outlook hasn't caught it yet.

I run and swear by Mailwasher mentioned above and Ad-aware. Dowload Ad-aware 5.83 PLUS the ref sig file 042-24.9.2002 and run it. "Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware and scumware components and lets you remove them safely. It is updated frequently."

I just had trouble with Xupiter and didn't have Ad-aware's ref sig. As soon as I downloaded that, Ad-aware found 17 instances of Xupiter AND CLEANED IT UP! Even with an updated anti-virus, a firewall, Mailwasher, Cookie Pal and Ad-aware, I still got Xupiter and have no idea how.

Sounds like you have the klez virus. My advice to you is to go to symantec.com, download Norton anti-virus and then download a file called "fixklez". Norton won't fix the klez virus, but it will protect you from others. The "fixklez" file should take care of your current problem, though.
