Deal Reached On Global AIDS Bill ($50 BILLION!)
CBSNEWS ^ | Jun 25, 2008 | Daniel W. Reilly

(The Politico) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Wednesday night that lawmakers from both parties had agreed “in principal” on a deal to move a massive international AIDS relief package.

The $50 billion program to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria abroad had been stalled in the Senate for months after clearing the House earlier this year.

Several Republican senators, led by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) had objected to the manner in which some of the AIDS funding was to be distributed in the bill.

Reid announced the breakthrough in a statement Wednesday night, however he did not offer any specifics on the compromise.

“Now that we have an agreement in principle, my strong preference would be to get this bill done this week,” said Reid. “We should be able to do this quickly and easily – and it should be done before President Bush goes to the G-8 Summit next week. That would send an important message to the world that our country’s commitment to fight HIV/AIDS has not wavered.”

Reid said he hoped his Republican colleagues would agree to pass the bill by unanimous consent, thus avoiding a protracted debate on the issue which has broad bipartisan support.

He also said he was “confident” that Republicans would agree to the agreement, although Reid did say lawmakers were still waiting on the final text of the bill.

We can’t afford the WOT, but we can afford this?

They are, in fact, trying to destroy us.

It’s gonna cost that much to move homosexuals to a penal colony?

If everyone hates the U.S.A. why do we keep sending them all more money?

I’m going to check Tom Coburn’s website.

I’m sure there’s an all-too-good reason for his objection to how the money is distributed.

Can you say welfare for dictators, kids?

Misleading headline, but that's SeeBS playing to their constituency. The TB and malaria parts are important, especially the TB.

Reid said he hoped his Republican colleagues would agree to pass the bill by unanimous consent, thus avoiding a protracted debate on the issue which has broad bipartisan support.

QUID PRO QUO, Mr. McConnell - a word to the wise.

It’s easy to give money away.....especially when you borrow it from other countries. It has been said that AIDS is an African problem. When will they stand up for themselves? They are training them for welfare like we did here in this country.

In our quest for world hegemony, we must have decided to carpet bomb with bales of increasingly devalued US dollars. sarc/

Can ANYONE tell me the last time that ANY other country on this planet gave even 1/10th as much money to the rest of the world? And yet we are constantly maligned as the worst thing that ever happened to mankind and the planet?

I'd love to see what would happen to the rest of the world if we closed ourselves off, allowed no one to come here, gave nothing to anyone outside the U.S., and didn't get involved in the rest of the world in any way (no military aid, intervention, etc.).

!$(*&@# ingrates.

$50 Billion won't change sexual practices of people in Africa or anywhere else.

Nope, it sure doesn’t cost that much to send a bunch of doctors around and gather at all the villages, sit down and explain to them exactly what causes it and how you will die if you do this, this, and this.

Personal responsibility was never even considered in this waste of our shiny...

$50B! Wow. That would repair a lot of bridges and roads, maybe even build some hospitals.

“Reid did say lawmakers were still waiting on the final text of the bill.”

Which is another way of saying some actually insist on READING the bill before rubber-stamping it.

$50 Billon earmark.
$49.999 Billion for AIDS
$0.001 Billion for TB and Malaria
$0.000 for DDT

Abstinence would truly be PRICELESS.

It’s been said that a corporation can do anything a regular human can do except have sex...

But the US corporately is certainly subsidizing a lot of sex this way.
