The deer hunter accused of killing six hunters and wounding two others in the woods of northern Wisconsin is believed to have resided in the Toledo area as a youth and attended Jones Junior High School.
Chai Vang, 36, of St. Paul, is listed as a student at the South Toledo school during the 1982-1983 school year, according to Toledo Public School documents.
Willie Braggs, a social studies teacher at Jones, said he remembers Mr. Vang as a student. "He was in my class in 1982 and he seemed like a pretty good student," Mr. Braggs said. "It was a real shock [to hear of the shootings]."
A wave of Laotian refugees was brought to the Toledo area in 1979 and the early 1980s. They were resettled here with the help of church groups and other local sponsors. It was not clear yesterday when Mr. Vang's family came to Toledo or when they left.
By 1994, only about 35 Hmong families remained in the area, largely because many families moved to other cities where there were more jobs available and larger concentrations of others in their ethnic group.
About 24,000 Hmong live in St. Paul.

"He was always such a good boy..."
the phrase most often used to describe murderers.
If it it was a "real shock" to his teacher, immagine how the victims families feel.
I hate this kind of stuff.
The cretin murdered the guys.
Thank God, one survived to tell us the facts.
Get the rope.
More blame the victim BS....
My wife worked the WIC (Women-Infants-Children) food program back when this wave was imported. Our town was the destination of several thousand. Within a few months they were gone. She found out from several of them that the welfare was better in Minnesota. So they packed up and moved there. Good riddance.
Feel free to dial 911 and die if you wish. For a trespassing call it's likely to take hours for them to show up, if they do at all. The guy had already been shot, when he called for help. They did as you suggested, and six are dead. Acording to the survivors, all they did was tell him it was private property, and ask him to leave.
Do you think we should have just called the UN after 9/11, and waited for them to take care of it?
The people who live in this area are pretty independent, self-sufficient, not accustomed to calling "the government" for help all the time. Combine that with being out in the boonies they don't have the "instinct" to call for help, they take care of their own.
PING
Thank you, Roccus.
Welcome to FR
I wanted to get that in because the way you think, you're not long for this planet
If the victims thought like him they'd still be on this planet.
Why don't you FReepmail me your address so I can come and help myself to your property. You can dial 911 and wait while I leave.
Do you have the FOGGIEST idea how long that would take? By then they would've been shot anyway.
And, WHO prior to this incident...would've thought THIS would happen??? Don't blame the victims, please.
You come home. To your property. Someone is IN said property....tell me what you're going to do, using this logic....
Two racial groups.
So you're buying the perp's story.
Just swell.
>I like your name followerofchrist, my name Credo Deus "I believe God" ;)
I try to follow Christ, rather than political pundits, which gets me in trouble since religion is so politicized these days. It is hard to try and overcome the bad side of human nature and worse when people use religion to justify the bad things they do and think. Christ sure has set high, laudable standards for us. He requires us to do what goes against our nature. Sometimes I post things, go back and am ashamed because I know Christ wouldn't say those things.
>It would have been nice if the police were called and this whole tragedy could have been averted, thats all I'm saying... In the future, with all the hostilities that have been going on between the two racial groups I hope they use the law next time..
They probably will call the cops every time they see a Hmong and the liberals will force the state to integrate tolerance education in hunter safety classes.
I suggest you read the following post:
Background of the Wisconsin shooting area

How do you know he wouldn't have just taken out a few police, as well?
I think you lead a sheltered life. Your statement that the victims should have called the authorities infers that they should have known what was about to occur. You've obviously never been hunting. Hunters don't expect to be confronted with violence when meeting other hunters. No one expects to meet up with a nut job, ever. And no one hunts next door to the police station. I'm glad you believe in God because then you must believe in evil. Blaming the victims is easy for someone with the benefit of hindsight. It also shows the level of your naivete.
I happen to believe the surviving victim.
The racial stuff was added later by the perp.
Then starting your first post with something other than "They should have..." would be advisable. For the future.
That statement may not be fair. Vang may have had words with the first guy but it sounds like he ambush shot the rest.
"Well, calling the game warden or police would have been better than the alternative..."
===
And just how soon could have gotten there? Perhaps you don't realize how big north woods areas are. There's not a cop or warden around the next tree.
.....not to mention the (in)ability to USE the cell phone in the woods.
This story has been found to be false....

What planet are you from?
OK. You're new here.....welcome aboard. May I make a suggestion? Do a search with "Wisconsin" in the keywords.
Sit back and read the threads...there's many. There is a LOT of information on them regarding this area of Wisconsin.
Please.
You need to not only choose your words wisely, but your topics as well.
Well, guess you just showed what you know.
Kitties might come calling.
Naaaaaaaaa......not yet. Please?
Thank you. I got the moderator to put a link to your post, in the title.
I'm not saying I agree with his advice, but just stating the obvious. Personally, I would have had my rifle trained on the armed trespasser from cover and ordered him to drop his weapon while he was still up in the tree. Failure to comply would have resulted in both Mr. Vang and his rifle dropping from the tree.
LOL! You're a funny!
